I as playing an epic game, and was mopping up the Americans, with the more powerful Incans to my North. I see that a ton of their troops are finding their way into my territory, and I am thinking war is upon me. I didn't want war, so I did what I could to avert it. I traded everything tradable to him that stayed for 20 turns for techs. I ended up trading him two luxuries, and near 500 gpt for a a few good techs, followed by "remove your forces or declare war" in which he actually declared war on me. I got free techs and no rep hit, how about that. He did the same thing later on after we made peace. I have used this to avert war before, but I guess there are just some super warmongering civs.

I don't suggest this as a strategy, but it worked quite nice to get free techs.

One of the things I have noticed with this tactic is that you should wait until they are at least into your territory (with >1 combat unit). That way you can demand "Remove...or declare war". If you offer all sorts of stuff but do not ask them to leave, they will often wait before declaring war.

thats a classic trick, but u also gotta be carefully not to give away to much money, sometimes AI will attack no matter the amount of cash

just one of the many dumb things AI does

I think the point is that you WANT them to attack. If they do, they lose out on 750 gpt * 20 turns and you get their money and techs.

I like that for the most part. I did that one time, but I got a bad effect. After you do this once, they won't accept any gpt. At least that was my experience.
