Civilization 5 - Game of the Month Training Series Game 218
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ //////////////////////////////////////

Welcome to the 218th game in the GOTM V Training Series! This Series allows new and old Civilization V fans to try out many features from Civ5's expansions and DLCs in a friendly environment. Participants are encouraged to post questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads (described below). Each game will specify the Civ you will play and the Victory Condition to strive for. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread.

MUST READ!
Our most sacred rule: Do not replay any turns!
If you make a mistake, accept it, and try to recover through game-play. To ensure fair play and prevent results exclusions, please set your Autosaves to "1 turn". In the event of a computer crash while playing, just reload to the previous autosave, then play on the same way you played it the first time. Please let Leif or me know (either in the forums or through Private Message) if you experienced a crash and how many turns you replayed.

Information about threads associated with each individual TSG - Must Read if you are new to the Game of the Month!
Spoiler :
Please note: If you wish to make a video of your game, please do not post any links to it until after the game submission date has passed. This is because of the potential spoilers that are created by posting before the end date. Thank you for your cooperation.
TSG Announcement thread (this one): This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don't be afraid to ask questions). Its also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Please don't post any game-related info once you open and play the save. Instead use the next thread.
After Actions thread: In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state your victory/loss date (preferably in the post title) and describe your path to glory in this post! Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after one month, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.
Results and Congratulations: We will post the results at the end of the submission period in the After Actions thread (sorted by earliest date and highest score ).

File Upload System
We have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature) Please note: you must submit your game on the turn following Victory. If you continue to play, the game overwrites the data and your submission could be rejected by the submission system.
This game runs through 28 February 2023.

Looks like a nice start; hill mountain. But is that a lake? A lake would have two food wouldn't it, and can a lake have Whales? I don't know.

If its not a lake, question is, do I move and search for one. Hard to move away from a mountain in a Science game. But it would be great to find a river. But also in a small continents game having some cities on the coast will be necessary.

North looks more promising for the Jag to explore but moving him to that hill due south is probably the best to see what's down there. Interesting decisions

That water tile to the SE is coast, so there's no fresh water there. I suspect it's a trap; an inland sea with no access to the ocean. Might still be a good settle-in-place, but I'm going to move my warrior west and then -- based on what I see -- probably NW, to see if there might be a river flowing north from that mountain. Who knows, Lake Victoria, El Dorado, or the Fountain of Youth could be just on the other side of the mountain. (my bet is for a river or a one-tile lake)

I will probably settle in place. Depends on what the jaguar finds on turn 1, but having a coastal capital with not too many coastal tiles could be great for food trade routes, while still having a lot of workable tiles. Even though the city would not be on fresh water. For the other settles I will look for coastal expands or fresh water. I agree with zxcvbob that it looks like an inland sea.

It's an interesting map, it's Small Continents Plus, came with the Scrambled Continents DLC. I've never seen it before this week. But it looked fun and very playable, so I thought we'd give it a try.

Putting the save up tonight. I'm traveling for work the next two days, won't have much of a chance tomorrow.

Inland sea wouldn't be terrible if you can put all your settlements on it. Id rather have the floating garden over the observatory.

So an inland sea counts as a lake? How can we be sure before settling, probably not possible.

You can create a new save until you find one, by using ingame editor to peak at the map and giving yourself the technologies you need. I'm certain that inland seas don't count as fresh water though, so 99% sure they don't allow you to build floating gardens.

Well we can't do this in a GotM. Can't replay turns in any way. But I realized that its irrelevant - Hanging Gardens should give a Floating Garden I think and should be obtainable on Emperor, so that's the route I'm going to take.

Edit. Or I guess you mean in a test game. I actually do have a game where I know there is an inland sea that I settled on; but I'm going to go for Hanging Gardens regardless.

Floating garden is a watermill replacement. You settle in place, you can't get a floating garden even with the Hanging Gardens. (HG will be a *very* high priority wonder just the same for the food and boost to great people.) It's a dilemma; give up the best UB in the game for your capital, or settle a few turns late and [probably] give up an observatory and coastal luxury. Your expos can still have FGs, assuming there's fresh water on the map *somewhere*. I suppose you can put all your guilds and the national epic in a city that does have fresh water...

Time to load this thing and see what's what

Nobody built Temple of Artemis in my game either. I thought maybe someone else built it really early and I hadn't noticed, but nope.

Moderator Action: We are well into spoilers now in the Announcement thread. Please continue this discussion in the Opening Action thread. Thank you.

edit - corrected the forum that we should use.

Probably settle in place...maybe after moving the warrior to SE hill or West jungle hill? Fingers crossed - first TSG in a decade (and my first BNW one)!

There is still no possibility to submit this TSG218, but I see that option is available for TSG219. I don't see any reason to skip submissions for TSG218.

Apologies. The game has been uploaded and I extended the finish date to 15 March to give you time for submission.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. :goodjob:
