Civilization 5 - Game of the Month Training Series Game 251
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ //////////////////////////////////////
Welcome to the 251st game in the GOTM V Training Series! This Series allows new and old Civilization V fans to try out many features from Civ5's expansions and DLCs in a friendly environment. Participants are encouraged to post questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads (described below). Each game will specify the Civ you will play and the Victory Condition to strive for. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread.

MUST READ!
Our most sacred rule: Do not replay any turns!
If you make a mistake, accept it, and try to recover through game-play. To ensure fair play and prevent results exclusions, please set your Autosaves to "1 turn". In the event of a computer crash while playing, just reload to the previous autosave, then play on the same way you played it the first time. Please let Leif or me know (either in the forums or through Private Message) if you experienced a crash and how many turns you replayed.

Information about threads associated with each individual TSG - Must Read if you are new to the Game of the Month!

Please note:

Spoiler :

If you wish to make a video of your game, please do not post any links to it until after the game submission date has passed. This is because of the potential spoilers that are created by posting before the end date. Thank you for your cooperation.
TSG Announcement thread (this one): This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don't be afraid to ask questions). Its also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Please don't post any game-related info once you open and play the save. Instead use the next thread.
After Actions thread: In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state your victory/loss date (preferably in the post title) and describe your path to glory in this post! Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after one month, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.

File Upload System
Spoiler :

We have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature) Please note: you must submit your game on the turn following Victory. If you continue to play, the game overwrites the data and your submission could be rejected by the submission system.

This game runs through September 15th 2024.

Well, I think settling on spot is an absolute no brainer here. Seriously couldn't ask for a better settle. good growth and hammers.

I've never played on a lakes map. IDK if it's large massive lakes, or if it's small baby lakes. Would naval work at all here? I'm totally ignorant. I've also never played as Denmark. Ski infantry seem useless. Metal casting instead of steel is something I never realized, and metal casting early is great with liberty. Maybe a Berserker rush will be fun.

I'm thinking if we're doing DV, I'll do a 3 city liberty early comp rush, hit NC and go straight to Berserker rush. Part of me wants to try Honor-Commerce-Autocracy, but I have 0 experience with that.

When setting up a Lakes map, you get to choose between Small lakes, Large lakes and (small) Seas. #251 is somewhere in between Large lakes and Seas. Another point is that it is a map script with fairly limited number of tiles. As such it is very well suited for aggressive play but less interesting for really wide peaceful play.

Wow, that start… SIP 100%.

Liberty or Honor depending on early scouting. Lots of tiles to improve in the capital, so Liberty might be nice. Honor helps with upgrade costs for our archers and warriors, but I’m worried that on immortal the AI won’t spam enough units for the extra gold from the finisher.

It might just be better to press the tempo advantage from Liberty. Plus we can already pillage like crazy with Berkserkers.

I definitely want to try a Berserker rush, never did one and they sound super fun.

I'm not very good at Domination though, used to be more of a builder but enoying Dom more and more recently. It's one of my favorite VCs now along with Cultural.

Will do some practice games to get a feel for the difficulty and how to beeline to Metal Casting most effectively.

Wow these starts... may be worth settling on the gold if there's a close nearby CS. That would provide the gold to quickly buy a 2-1 tile.

Heads up, there may be a visual bug on Lakes, possible a conflict with EUI. I noticed on a different map that there were some grassland tiles that looked like hills.

But then you have to work the bare grassland tile to start. So the starting scout is taking 8 turns (1 to move, plus 7 turns to produce). As pointed out below, the scout is not affected other than the 1 extra turn for moving.

And that puts Oasis and the second wheat in the 3rd ring. For Liberty and Honor starts I tend to buy more tiles in the capital.

A hill capital working a hammerless tile still produces a scout in 5 turns - you get 2 hammers per turn from the city tile and 3 from Palace.

One small tip is that if you settle in place on a start like this, you can get your first scout in 4 turns without sacrificing much - just work the sheep for one turn. A city needs 15 food to grow to pop 2, so you'll still grow in 8 turns even if you work a 1-food tile for a turn.

Ah yes, my mistake, was thinking of settling a flat tile.

But I’m still never moving to the gold (away from the double wheat) on a start like this, especially on immortal where I’m not getting the guaranteed early 7gpt from selling the lux.

Thanks for this inspiring perspective. I’ve been getting some RL induced distaste for domination since a while back, but the cartoon-like impression of vikings can help against that. On the topic of fictional vikings I can also recommend the novel Red Orm or The Long Ships by Swedish novelist Frans G Bengtsson, which really sucks the marrow out of the juicy stereotypes. (On a side note, I even find the name Frans oddly funny.)

Red Orm is indeed a worthwhile reading, especially if you like light/funny content.

As much as I like settling on mining luxes I must agree with everyone else; SiP is the way to go. Of course I'm going to move the warrior south to see if maybe Mt. Kili is lurking in the fog; that would be worth moving.

I always find it difficult to use the Danish uniques so this will probably play like a neutral civ for me which will make it a bit harder.

I'm getting some plains and grassland tiles that look like mountains. Shocked me at first when I saw not-Carthage moving units on it, but then I looked closely at the yields.

I’ve seen some weird stuff so far. A barb camp on top of a mountain (that is actually plains) and an ancient ruin on top of a mountain (that is actually a mountain). 😅

I also have a ruin on top of a mountain adjacent to the first capital I took. I suppose I'll claim it one day when the borders expand to it. Again, a moment of shock when I moved troops in and saw they had a ruin undiscovered on their border. Then I realized it was because they couldn't move to it.

Moderator Action: I know this is a friendly competition, but once a player opens a save, please do not post about that game in the announcement thread. You may, unintentionally, spoil the game for your fellow players. Please post these things in the Opening Action thread.

Would be fun to do comp bow rush then berserker rush then crossbow rush. But that needs a lot of gold for upgrades, so I'm not sure if liberty is the play for that.
