Check this folder: ...\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization VII\Saves\Single\auto\prev
autosaves from previous age are moved there on age transition. Or is that folder empty too?

sigh - finished antiquity and didn't count my total turns, and noticed all the autosaves were gone so couldn't check there either (never seen that before)
don't suppose there is any other way to check is there?

Yes there is. A little round about but there is a sub directory called prev under auto in you local drive that may have the saves. Also, if you are connected to your internet, you can check your OneDrive and look at deleted files. You may be able to find them there, the game used OneDrive by default.
