Turning the vaka nui into a support flanker unit sounds interesting. I also like taking the fishing boat construction bonus off the UA.

I don’t think having such a low limit is a good idea though. Maybe if it were 5 or something? I don’t think these would be able to keep up with your improving needs adequately on larger maps, even with 5 moves.

I really like the battle scout Māori Warrior. It’s much better where it is; please don’t move it back 🙏
 
I agree that 2 seems like a really low limit. Practically what that means since the boats are so cheap is you have to frequently find the old ones, delete them, and buy new ones, which is kind of tedious and pointless.
 
I've tested my proposed Maori Warrior (as a Longswordsman replacement). It feels very good to use, both in battle and as a settler escort.

Meanwhile, the AI can't even use the scout version in battles since it only has the explore AI. I'm not sure what effects there will be if we add UNITAI_FAST_ATTACK to it in the Unit_AITypes table. Maybe the AI will allocate some for war when they have enough units for recon? But either way they'll all go back to explore when upgraded.

Should probably make it so you can't have more than one per tile though. Just so you don't have situations where someone would park like all 5 of them on one tile to give a stupid crazy flanking bonus.

At that rate if you couldn't have multiple Vaka Nui's per tile anyway, maybe even remove the limit altogether, but after the second or third one, each additional Vaka Nui takes up 1 army supply. Then you can have a whole fleet of them for war as well as a couple at home if you really wanted to run a build like that.

Me too :) I think there definitely are options to tweak the AI to use them better after the 3UC 4/ 4UC integration is complete

Okay fair point. If they become support unit superflankers maybe just keep the 2 limit. This seems like something that needs to be tested though, so we can establish how/if this even works.

or maybe the fishing boat building could stay on embarked units and the vaka nui ONLY does the flanking? That way the unit limit isn’t constraining the creation of fishing boats.

Either way I like that this proposal is trying to do something with the work boat slot; with current Polynesia’s design that component is a dead slot for a unit that is entirely eclipsed by the UA, but still buildable for some reason.
 
Work boats are needed for offshore platforms.
 
It has never made sense to me why fishing boats are on the UA but not oil platforms. You can’t just delete the work boat unit because you might need it… in Modern era.

Perhaps a better wording (and therefore ability) would have been "can build Work Boat improvements".
