I haven't used armies too much, but now that I'm going for all-out conquest I've got some questions about them..

1) can Elite units in armies produce great leaders?

2) can you unload and load units into armies to keep them up-to-date..

3)or at the very least, upgrade the units in an army?

And basically.. how do you guys use armies? And for what purpose.. etc..etc..

Answers to those three would be cool but also some general input about the usefulness of armies.

thanks

Don't know about one for sure... never seen it happen. Don't think so.

2. No, at least not without cheating. There is a bug that allows you to use the move stack command to move an army, with other like units, into a city and remove all the units within it. This bug will work for awhile, but eventually the game will crash.

3. No, but in conjuction with the above bug, you can. Again, it is cheating, and may cause your game to crash. (There is justice!)

I'm marching my first leader back to a city. Should I load it with three legionaries, or will one legionary and two of my elite archers be just as good? Or hypothetically (I'm putting my good units in the army), does an army of three archers attack better than say an archer and two spearmen? Basically I'm wondering how the ADM of a mixed-unit army is calculated.

save him for a wonder if all you have are ancient units. At least that's my theory.

I don't even think of an army until KNights come about, even then cavalry is usually only a few years away and they become obsolete.

It's hard to say, but DO NOT make an army of archers, it's a waste.

Use'em for wonders, for now . . . then make that army (ies) to get Heroic Epic and Military Academy. :goodjob:

Armies are pretty much unstoppable - check any of the "Combat Calculator"s to see the power of 12HP (veteran army). Think of your unit has to loose 12 rolls before it dies compared to only 4, and you can see how they work. A swordsman army (attack 3) has a 66% chance of beating a fortified musketman (defense of 7.4 with bonuses).

Cheers,
Shawn

I've built a armies of swordsmen before, and they dominated every battlefield I fought on until musketmen. That was really early in the game though... like 75 turns before knights. If knights were just around the corner, I wouldn't bother making an army of swordsmen.

I generally keep at least one army of the latest offensive unit around, it allows me to take enemy cities relatively easily without losing many units.

My leader's about halfway home now. I wish I could use those enemy roads. I'm definitely going to use it for an army. I've seen Wonders in Civ1 & 2. Never had an army before. Besides, I want those small wonders. I'm just wondering if three swordsmen in the army is a waste when I could use one and group it with cheaper units.

As Persia, I made my first Army out of Immortals very early in the game. Then I could build Heroic Epic very soon. Since then, with the High amount of Leaders I have had because of Heroic Epic, if I didn't have a Wonder That I wanted to Rush I would make the Leader into an Army....But not fill the Army. Converting the GL to an Army allows another GL to be born (if your still at War). I just keep the Armies aropund (unfilled) until I get Modern Armor, or, if I get into a situation when I need one (not Likely until Modern Age). Now, in 1752 AD, along with Armies produced by the Military Academy, I have five unfilled Armies waiting around until Modern Armor is available (about 8 to 12 turns). I also have the Pentagon already built because I have so many armies.:goodjob:
