hello folks, I'm very new Civ player. I bought Civ 5 goty today on steam and I have a few quesitions. would be great if you help me.

I started to play with Ottomans and my colony was in south america. I conquered several city-state and there is no city-state left in south america. then, I sent my soldiers to north america and there is only one empire, the Persians. so, I'm wondering rest of them settled around the world or my campaing will be in only continent of america? map: earth, faction numbers: 12

second question, why cant annex cities with archers? should I always use melee units to annex a city?

thank you for all answers

1. taking out all city states may not be a good idea, other city states will not trade with you and you will get a warmonger status amongst the other civs.

2.Once you obtain the tech astronomy you can travel the oceans with a caravel, and you units will also be able to traverse the ocean tiles. You will find other civs then.

3. Yes you must use a melee unit to take a city.

oh I didnt know that so I'll not conquer all city-states anymore

and thank you for other answers too

regards

It sounds like you are playing at a fairly low level, so taking city states will not affect your game much. IMO, I really think new players should play at the Prince level as soon as they learn some basic mechanics of the game. You learn more by getting beat!

I like being allies with city-states. It's a pretty easy way to get resources and it denies the other Civ's those resource.

Also the diplomatic win is probably the easiest win.

Yes, I found out the hard way, half a dozen archers can beat a city into have no defense, but it will NOT FALL TO THEM. You need one (two or three is better) melee unit to deliver the coup de grace.

@Hustapha Thool

yes playing at begginer for now. but today, started little bit harder campaing :)

@Sherlock

how can I be ally with city-state without giving them money? are there any more options?

I don't know the answers to your other questions but from experience, no ranged units (Archers, Trebuchets, Catapults, Bombers) can capture cities, only melee and land units can such as Warrior, Infantry, Modern Armor.

You'll quickly find that completing CS "quests" - i.e., Killing Barbs that the CS requests help with, and/or gifting them units when a rival Civ is attacking, and/or finding something the CS wants (Great Person, World Wonder, Legendary Tile) - will boost your influence with that CS. You can become friends and even allies without spending a dime...

But just throwing $$ at them is the most sure-fire way of gaining their trust. And Resources. And everything else.

Personally, I try make friends with any CS on my borders. They provide a buffer from attack, and are easier to defend. In the early game, I just send my units out on Barb hunts (also speeds along your Culture once you research the Honor SP), and this - in addition to boosting XP and earning Culture - will ofttimes also boost my influence with those CS's who are requesting anti-Barb help.

In the later game, I just throw $$ at the CS's. More reliable, once the early Barbs are gone. ;)

Other than throwing cash at the City States (CS) and completing their quests, one technique is to keep an eye on barb camps near a CS but don't destroy them until the CS asks for assistance. Also barbs killed in or at the CS borders will grant you influence. If you want to be a CS- killer wait until you've explored the map, when CSs will ask you to take other CSs out. That way killing one CS gains you influence with another. Oh and choose the Moghuls, who get a 30% bonus when fighting CSs.

All that said I rarely find myself killing a CS. The best way to enjoy the game is to ensure you have a strategy and follow that strategy. You'll learn a lot here. And don't stay on the beginner levels for too long. It rots the brain!

Enjoy clocking up your first few hundred hours.
