Boys, boys, isnt it time that some of you let go of your grief over not liking Civ 3 and moved on to happier pastures? I can well understand people not liking a game in 18 years of computer gaming Ive bought a few disappointments too. I can also understand people not liking Civ3, despite having thoroughly enjoyed it myself. I can even see the usefulness of posting negative impressions on the Internet, so long as they are backed up with some reasonable explanations (as some of the complaints posts here have been).
What does mystify me is that some people cant leave it at that. Some of you have come back here day after day, week after week, to continuing complaining. Why? CivFanatics appears to be an excellent site founded and patiently staffed by people who enjoy the Civ series (and provided free). Repeating your gripes isnt going to change anything, and why would you imagine that the majority of the Civ community want to keep hearing about your ongoing personal sadness?
As many companies do, Firaxis put in a brief appearance on several forums after the game debuted to do the traditional PR and bug collection but they seem to have moved on now. And Im sure they feel sufficiently informed about some peoples dislikes by now.
I recently bought another well known strategy game also much hyped for its connection to another successful game designer. After playing for a few days I decided that I wasnt impressed enough to want to keep playing. So I deleted it, kept it for a few days in case I changed my mind, and then got rid of it. End of story.
Well, not quite end of story. I went and bought a Flight Sim instead (the excellent IL2 Sturmovik). Unsurprisingly, that isnt perfect either it wouldnt support my preferred joystick but so far its been a lot of fun, despite my still being at the stage where I crash a lot. However, one line in the manual did catch my eye, and caused me to laugh. Its about an aspect of the game that is difficult (and that I havent managed to quite master yet). From page 17:
And theres no point in moaning either thats just how its done, OK!
Maybe they should have put it on the Civ 3 box.
O.K. thats it. Now you can all leap to your keyboards and scream Fanboy at me. But it would be great if you decided to make a New Years resolution to lighten up a bit and try and concentrate on working out useful tips and strategies instead. Please. Pretty please. Genuine please. Any chance?
