I am not sure if this is even possible, even if it is, I imagine it would need some major coding.
But I had a thought (a while ago actually), and wanted to bring it to the attention of the community and see if there is any feasibility to the proposal.

Specifically when speaking about the extended future mods, many here seem to focus on two scenarios.

a) Extending Technology generating larger weapons, etc..
b) Post-Apocalyptic, Mad Max-esque warfare.

My thought was a Mod that had a chance to lead to either, depending of course on an "Apocalyptic Event".
The event, triggered by global warming, too many nuclear weapons used, meteor strike, whatever... causes the game to change the available tech tree, change terrain, etc... and basically reboot society.
Of coarse if the event doesn't happen, the game proceeds as normal with more advanced technologies, bigger guns, exploring space, etc...

You can create resource chains which require various supporting buildings as a requirement for building modern units. Then if there is a disaster you won't have those chains (and your production will drop) so it will either be impossible or take a long time to build modern units. Then add some post-Apocalyptic units which are just a tad better than the Medieval units and you are good.

Just set tech A leads to certain techs, tech B leads to other techs.
If event occurs, disable tech A. Else disable tech B.
