I feel like a new siege unit between trebuchets and cannons would be nice. Currently, it almost feels discouraging to go to war during the 50-ish turn lull where you're using Knights, Cuirassiers, Musketmen, etc. Then all of the sudden, Cavalry, Riflemen and Cannons come along and offensive war is once again much more attractive.

I don't really have an idea of what sort of unit COULD be implemented, but something that comes around the time you get guilds with a strength of 7-8 would be great, honestly. This is assuming that the tech tree is largely the same as it is in Civ 4 as was stated numerous times now, and so far the units look nearly the same as well.

Cannon is available too late in Civ4. We were using gunpowder for cannons before muskets. We shouldn't have to wait for a tech as late as Artillery. Perhaps a Bombard available with gunpowder would solve it for Civ 4? I agree this is a slight problem in Civ4. Trebs have TOO LONG a life here ... :)

I'd just like to note that in the course of a 12 hour game of Civ, I end up using Catapaults for about 2 hours, Trebs for 6 hours (!!!), Cannons for an hour, Artillery for an hour, and Mobile Arty for an hour. Yes, that's 11 but the first hour of the game usually has no siege.

I just think something could be done between trebuchets in cannons but I have no viable suggestions. I think something along the lines of gunpowder like suggested adding a cannon would be great, but reduce the cannon's strength to maybe 7-8 instead of 12. Additionally, we could add a later cannon to make up for the earlier one fitting into the game, which would unlock with steel.

Surely there's more than one cannon in use in history? I'm positive the cannons of the revolutionary war weren't be used in 1200AD.

I'm sorry for the double post, but I'd like to bump this to see if anyone else is interested in the discussion.

This discussion is irrelevant at the time since Civ V will be significantly different than Civ IV. Who knows how the siege units will even work in Civ V? We also don't know if they need to add a new siege unit because the units may be divided by era much more equally in Civ V. It's hard to call for detailed changes about units in Civ V based on Civ IV since the combat is going to be so much different.
