unit control issues

As a long-time and dedicated fan of the Civilization franchise, I feel compelled to share my deep frustration with the current state of unit control in Civilization VII. I’ve been playing this series for years, and while I’ve always appreciated the depth, strategy, and evolution of the games, I find myself incredibly disappointed by some glaring omissions in basic functionality—specifically, those related to unit management.

In previous installments, there was a simple but extremely effective feature that allowed players to click on a unit and use the drop-down menu in the unit control tab to view all other units of the same type. This made managing armies—especially in the later stages of the game when dozens of units are spread across the map—not only manageable but strategic. This feature has been inexplicably removed in Civilization VII. Without it, locating and organizing units such as archers or siege weapons becomes tedious and inefficient. Having to manually scan the entire map to locate units is not only time-consuming but undermines the tactical experience that has defined Civilization for decades.

Additionally, the handling of aircraft units is severely lacking. In previous games, the game would automatically cycle through any unit that had an available action at the start of each turn. However, this does not apply to aircraft in Civilization VII, even when they are available to move or attack. In the late game, when managing a significant number of aircraft, it’s incredibly easy to overlook them without that auto-cycle feature. As a result, turns are often ended with valuable units sitting idle—not because of poor strategy, but because the game fails to flag them properly.

These oversights are not minor inconveniences—they represent a major step backward in functionality for a franchise that has long prided itself on strategic depth and player control. I sincerely hope these issues are addressed in an upcoming patch or update, because they’re detracting significantly from the gameplay experience and, frankly, testing the patience of your most loyal fans.

Sincerely,
A Loyal Civilization Fan
