There's two ways I usually play Civ: no time limit with all Victory types other than Score (most common), and occasionally, Score Victory with time limit and all other Victory types off.
This thread is about Score Victory.
The reason I enjoy score victories is that it allows me to build an empire in a more fluid and immersive manner. But the current system isn't good enough.
I believe a better Score Victory would use a system similar to Diplomatic Victory: Points.
Rather than getting an increase in score every time you accomplish a small achievement, such as a new tech, you'd instead gain Points for worthy achievements.
Starting a new game, you'd be able to decide the amount of Points a Civ needs in order to win the game. 25 Points, 50 Points. Whatever, it would be up to the player. The first Civ to achieve all Points wins the game. (you could add a time limit to prevent it from dragging).
Points should be clear accomplishments such as:
Constructing a Wonder - 1 Point
Conquering a City - 1 Point (only applies once to each city conquered, per civ)
Converting a City - 1 Point (only once per city)
Great Person - 1 Point
First to advance Era - 1 Point
Golden Age - 1 Point
Heroic Age - 2 Points
Great Works - 1 Point
1 Diplomatic Point = 1 Point
10 Pop - 1 Point (only once per city)
etc, etc, etc
What Should NOT count as points:
Techs
Civics
Districts built
Buildings
Units
etc, etc, etc
-------------------
A system like that would give players clear goals while still allowing them to go for a more diverse play style.
