A question about GOTM

I'm not a moderator but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn last night :D

Seriously, to submit the game for comparison and counting in the rankings you are supposed to play with Civ3 patch level 1.29f. PTW does not uninstall the vanilla civ3 so it's still there too under the infogrames submenu (in a default installation). If all else fails, do a search for civilization3.exe on your hard drive and run that. Make sure you're patched to 1.29. I'm not sure what country's patch you need, so I won't give you a link...because they're different

Good luck and welcome to the board!

I just noticed you were from Italy....whereabouts do you live? I have a friend that lives in Genoa....

I live in Grado twice venice and triest.
But my question is, is there a GOTM of civ3 play the world too?
or only with civ 3 patched 1.29 ?

Trombas,

Welcome to the GOTM and I hope your will join us in playing the game this month and in February, but use the Civ3v1.29 program that is automatically installed on your computer if you have the PTW program.

The February game will be as Rome and I think you will find it very challenging and enjoyable.

The reasons for holding off on implementing PTW for the GOTM are:

1) PTW is not yet available in most places on earth and our player pool includes hundreds of players from all over the world.

2) Even where PTW is available, the software patch versions required to make the game run reliably are not available or functional in every country.

3) When fully patched to the current software version (PTWv1.14f), the PTW program still contains a number of significant exploits and bugs that can disrupt play and render the it impossible for players to submit complete and valid game results. Even if these problems are tolerable on an individual basis when you play the game alone, they represent a management nightmare when trying to support 200 to 300 players trying to play a common game. We are anticipating that Firaxis will release an additional software patch soon that will address some of these issues, but the timing of that release will be too late to have the patch in place before the February game.

4) The game for Gotm16-Rome is already designed and in final testing to make sure it is ready for your to play and enjoy. Every player that has PTW has the ability to play the game in Civ3v1.29 because that version is part of the PTW support package.

5) Every game that gets submitted to the GOTM is reviewed and tested for for validity and some of the tools we use have been developed without support from the Infogrames or Firaxis. We are currently upgrading and testing these tools but this takes at least several weeks to a month of very committed volunteer effort from some of our best players.

6) We are implementing significant scoring changes to the Global Ranking and Individual Game Scoring systems for the GOTM games. We have to test these systems in Civ3v1.29 and again in PTW and this is complicated by the choice Firaxis made to not make portions of the PTW game available to any of the game support staff prior to us just purchasing it through retail channels. The new Scoring System that everyone has been dying to have implemented will take hopefully effect with the Gotm17-Carthage(or equivalent) game that will be played in March.

So there are the six major reasons for starting PTW in March and asking you join us in playing Civ3v1.29 now.

Unfortunately, this isn't true: There's no 1.29f patch for the German version but there is PTW.....(I believe the same goes for the French and the Spanish versions).

The only way for us to participate is by using PTW.

Unfortunately Moose,

We have no control over the fact that Infogrames and/or Firaxis chose to exclude the German language version of Civ3 from the V1.29 patch release. This decision in part accounts for why the PTW version of the game has received higher reviews in Germany than anywhere else in the world.

We cannot yet support you in playing the game in PTW and there are a number of unresolved bugs and exploits in the PTW v1.14 version (2nd patch) that make it unreliable to accept valid submissions from the game for competitive or comparative play.

You must have Civ3 installed on you computer in order to run PTW legally, so I suggest you test your installed Civ3 version to see what revision level you are at and then find the nearest possible langauge version of the v1.29 game patch that is available for you and install that version with an eye towards backing up and substituting the german language versions of the text files that can be found in your /Civilization_III/Text directory.

95% of the German language support issues are in those text files or embedded in the GotmXX save game files in a way that bypasses your language version anyway.

Finding a solution to the v1.29 compatiblity issue will not impact your play of PTW in any way because all of the program support and lanquage for that new program is located in a seperate directory.

It is interesting that Infogrames and Firaxis would chose not to include at least the most recent versions of Civ3 patches in their release of PTW, but this just creates a little bit of an opportunity for you to figure out how more about how the patches work so that you can be prepared to find work arounds for the next two or three patches that will be release for PTW.

Even if the next patch for PTW were to be released in the next 3 to 4 weeks as we anticpate, this would probably still create a version compatibility issue for you since the patch probably will not instantly come out in a German version. Any version of a PTW GOTM that will be released for Gotm17 will include a requirement for tha latest patch version beyond v1.14. We will be supporting the Gotm Games 17, 18, 19 etc in both Civ3v1.29 and the latest PTW patch version to make sure we inconvenience and exclude the fewest number of players.

cracker, unfortunately the european versions of vanilla civ3 are not compatible with the us-version, so, for owners of the German version, there is no legal way of playing a civ3-save made with the us-version...at least no way that I knew of.

Mazarin,

I am not sure if your response is really accurate when it comes to save file compatibility. We are currently receiving xxxxxxxxx.sav file versions from v1.29 games played in countries all over the world.

Romania, Italy, Greece, France, Russia, Ukraine, South Africa, India, Brazil, Portugal, England (and more).

A number of the current players speak English so poorly that it is clear that Civ3 is the only common language and that their civiliopedia and other text content must be in a language other than English or the US version as you call it.

I know that the Italian V1.29 version is available and that the primary internal content variants for these version are language/text oriented.

Try to span the gap and it will open up lots of opportunities for you.

Recognize that even when Gotm17 comes out in March you will have two options for play- Civ3v1.29 and the most recent and up to date Patch for PTW. It is very likely that a new patch for PTW will be released shortly and that this patch may not be fully language compatible with the German version. Civ3v1.29 is your backup position while PTW continues to have functional + distribution + patch problems.

cracker,

I think, I'm going to take part in the actual GOTM...the deadline is Feb.2nd...if I understood right? and I do have the US-Version. But I know that German and English versions are not compatible as I'm more engaged in the German community and we have had many problems with incompatibility during the last months.
