Firaxis got multiplayer wrong in a lot of ways:

- The maps are far too big.
- Some traits are specifically regarding barbarians but to take the *luck* element out of MP games its often best to switch them off.
- I haven't yet had an issue free game with more than 2 people.
- If someone drops, you can't pause the game while you wait for them to come back. If someone has a sudden violent case of the squits or an irresistible urge to get a beer you can't pause the game for them.
- Quick game speed is just too slow...It takes hours and hours and hours to get through a game.
- The lobby is very un-informative. The joining screen even less so.
- Probably my favourite --- Its not possible to change the settings after you've hosted a game.

Blah. Blah. Blah. Its all a bit disappointing.
 
Starting game at Medieval Era helps the speed a lot = games finish after 3 hours of playtime. Also try team game the research is double at least
 
game arent slow unless you play the usual nonsense ffa with 20 players etc

if you play a normal teamer game its doable (but still im disappointed by the bad performance for a turn game)
 
maps to big? i don't think any map could be too big, unless your playing a HUGE map with only 3 civs on it
 
I think the map size is a bit too big, but remember you don't need cities everywhere and units move faster.

The lag between turns if there is an A.I. player is what really sucks.
