I think more than any other Civ version I've played, what works effectively in CiV changes dramatically depending on the difficulty level you've played.
I've come across so many articles discussing a strategy I've tried and failed with on Immortal or Diety only to find out it was on a King difficulty game at the bottom of a long post (or worse difficulty is not mentioned).
I think (and others have mentioned this) that the biggest jump is between Emperor and Immortal.
So in the interest of saving time and getting information appropriate to the game your playing, indicating difficulty up front is quite helpful whether your requesting help or offering a strategy or guide.
Edit: You may assume this from my post but I'm plowing through all Victory types on Emperor and really struggling with Immortal - ICS seems like most effective strategy but after I conquer my first neighbour things begin to crumble - I seem to have major happiness issues if I puppet or annex opponents (and this is only building Library + Coloseum + units in my cities) and if I raze I seem to quickly provoke DOWs from other AI. Even if my army is strong enough to mitigate some DOW's after Razing a civ (minus its capital) I don't have the happiness to pop down more than 1 or 2 settlers before Im -10 happy and the AI's quickly gobble up the remaining land, then proceed to complain about our close borders and DOW.
Sorry to combine two posts into one, I generally try to find someone else encountering the same exact issues as me but every time I read something and think 'this guy is having the same issue' it turns out to be Prince difficulty or something.
