In my most recent game, I'm playing as ghandi on noble, oasis map. As usual, the player starts off in the "bad" part of the map, mostly filled with jungles and plains. but no worries I thought. Just use my regular stratagies I thought. Little did I know about my soon to be pearls.

I got 2 sources of copper with BW. great I thought, get some practice in ancient warfare. The Incans are soon crushed by an army of axemen. but this will serve to make a brutal discovery even more painful.

I didn't have Iron in my area, that's ok. I can make due without. As usual, no friends because of my heatheness. but that money is worth more then any ally.

I figured I'd make my next move in the renassance, where my skills really show up. I'd attack with cavalry, cannons, and riflemen. crushing any nation under my foot. Then I realized I had no horses. my dear Mansu Masu stopped trading them to me. I decided to finish what was left of Inca with my
force of riflemen. Next era I thought, Next era.

I discovered some Oil in the industrial era. on the very edge of my empire, near the persian boarder. A bit unstable but better than nothing. plenty of uranium which is fine, but it is a reasource with one use. and a use that I cannot put into effect without support.

The moment of truth, the discovery of industrialism. With that aluminum I can criuse to a peaceful space victory.

But no, this sick fallacy is shattered by my horrific discovery. I HAVE WAITED 5825 YEARS TO FIND OUT THAT THERE ARE ONLY 3 STRATIEGIC REASOURCES IN THE LARGEST EMPIRE ON THE PLANET. WHICH EVERYONE BUT ME HAS.

My Ideals for a pacifist victory, gone. without aluminum, I can't compete in the space race. might be too late for cultural. I have no friends. A short window for the use of regular tanks before my opponents build better units. it's not fair.... IT'S NOT FAIR!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH:mad:

now that that's out of my system. better get through that window. LET'S SEE YOU TRY TO KEEP AWAY MY REASOURCES !!!!!! :scan: => :nuke: =>:king:

lol dude that isnt fair but its very funny when it aint you.  no offence

That's really too bad. You could probably have avoided that by killing off one of the 3 Al holders earlier. :D

This is why you should conquer as much land in the game as possible, as early as possible, so the chances of discovering strategic resources within your own land is made as great as possible. (Although, it does sound like you did that, you just got shafted!)

Or, at least, corner in your neighbors so they always remain weaker than you, so if a strategic resource appears in their land, you can waltz in and take it at any time. Hey Ceasar, you don't need that Coal do you? SEND IN THE CAVALRY!!!! Oh, and you too Izzy! We could always use a backup source!

I've always been lucky with aluminum. Sometimes I'll claim a barren rock thinking, "What the hell, there's nothing here but might as well get it before the AI does." Sure enough, it's got aluminum. I always disable Space Race so that's never a problem...but man, I can't LIVE without stealth bombers.

Got *really* lucky in my Ice Age America game -- Aluminum discovered in a mine right next to Washington!!!!!!!!!

In one of my first Civ IV games on a continents map, I had a similar experience. I was placed in a corner of a continent. Pretty soon I was boxed in with only a few cities.

I thought that Axemen would fix this problem. But as I discover Bronze Working, I find that I have no copper, and there is even no copper in sight next to me!

Ok, I think, bad luck. But I'll definitely have iron. And what do you think? Iron Working comes in, and there is no iron in my territory, nor anywhere near my borders. So at this point I really had to be careful with my neighbours, because my cities were protected by Archers while my neighbours had Swordsmen, and then Macemen later on.

However I maintained peaceful relations with my neighbours, built up lots of cottages, so I was reasonably advanced. So I thought I might have a stab at the spaceship. But when industrialism came - surprise, surprise, no aluminium! I did have coal and oil though, but no metals at all. I quit at that point.

But now I realise that I should've just built the UN and pushed for diplomatic victory, since I had good relations with my neighbours.

Ok, now the game is just mocking me. After conquering much weaker egypt, obtaining aluminum and coal in the process. I go for the space race. I GE + US the space elevator, along with sabatoging my opponent's important parts, and I have it made. about 4 turns before I win, "a source of coal has been discovered near delhi". Gee thanks I could have used that about 200 YEARS AGO!!

I had similar:played as JC , thinking Praetorians...heh heh heh. No iron. No Copper. No Horses. Damn. built tonnes of Longbowmen and similar (actuly was highest in power :P). I DID have oil though, so i won via lots of tanks.
