i’m on the younger side so i actually first got into civ V as a kid. absolutely fell in love with it and have almost 650 hours sunk into it (rookie numbers). having almost 600 hours in civ 6, i felt like it they lost their path in a ways. you could tell they wanted to make it more accessible to newer players and i was only with that. i just had an itch that needed to be scratched. humankind and millennia both introduced things i liked but that civ itch was still there
now onto the good part. Civ 7 is by far the most optimistic i’ve ever been for a civ game. the changes made are absolutely game changing in lot of ways (a good thing).
the age system feels so much better. each civ feels more fleshed out and personal. having different rule sets, resources and civs in the next age is such a nice change to the linear strategy of Civs past.
the new commanders are one of my favorite additions. being able to package up an army and move them around is already amazing, add on the the abilities to command units and it’s so good. firaxis managed to eliminate micromanagement of the military but also make it more tactical which is brilliant.
now the game is certainly still rough around the edges. i’ve seen minor graphical bugs such as ghost enemy units, and the UI is a bit of a mess. while i’m not too critical on that, it does lack a lot of info which has always been my bread and butter with civ games. there’s no doubt that the Devs are already working on the UI (since they said that themselves) but i have to say in terms of launches this game is probably the best civ game at launch in a long time and that gives me even more hope that this game could end up a bonafide masterpiece
