i’m on the younger side so i actually first got into civ V as a kid. absolutely fell in love with it and have almost 650 hours sunk into it (rookie numbers). having almost 600 hours in civ 6, i felt like it they lost their path in a ways. you could tell they wanted to make it more accessible to newer players and i was only with that. i just had an itch that needed to be scratched. humankind and millennia both introduced things i liked but that civ itch was still there

now onto the good part. Civ 7 is by far the most optimistic i’ve ever been for a civ game. the changes made are absolutely game changing in lot of ways (a good thing).

the age system feels so much better. each civ feels more fleshed out and personal. having different rule sets, resources and civs in the next age is such a nice change to the linear strategy of Civs past.

the new commanders are one of my favorite additions. being able to package up an army and move them around is already amazing, add on the the abilities to command units and it’s so good. firaxis managed to eliminate micromanagement of the military but also make it more tactical which is brilliant.

now the game is certainly still rough around the edges. i’ve seen minor graphical bugs such as ghost enemy units, and the UI is a bit of a mess. while i’m not too critical on that, it does lack a lot of info which has always been my bread and butter with civ games. there’s no doubt that the Devs are already working on the UI (since they said that themselves) but i have to say in terms of launches this game is probably the best civ game at launch in a long time and that gives me even more hope that this game could end up a bonafide masterpiece

Glad you're enjoying it. We've seen both ends of the spectrum today, it's proving to be as divisive as predicted. :)
just as water is wet, civ games will be decisive!

from what i’ve seen, i don’t necessarily agree with the reviews bombing for the UI but i get it. is it bad and unfinished? yes but it still tells you all the relevant info you need for the most part.

i think change is not only inevitable but needed. Civ 6 was the “growing pains” of Firaxis trying to expand the market. Civ 7 is a big return to that “one more turn” mantra.

Is "review bombing" now just what we call it when tons of reviews roll in that are critical of a product we like? The game is getting rightfully criticized, there's no nefarious plot behind it.

and from the reviews and reception it seems VII isn't as big a return to that mantra and some of these changes weren't as nessecary as some of you think

i think it’s to each their own.. people are more than welcome to have their opinions on it. i agree with all of them that the UI is a major problem. i dont see the point of nuking the reviews because of that and other QoL issues that can easily be fixed with patches or mods. should this stuff come out on release? 100% but its not breaking the game for me.

for me personally, civ 6 lost that “just one more turn” for me. its a preference thing but the game felt more gimmicky than anything. Civ 7 reeled that in imo but im curious to hear what changes you felt were unnecessary?

Imo Civ 6 was inferior to its predessors but largely because Firaxis failed to refine the AI and/or give modders access to tools to do so themselves. Hilariously how you feel about 6 being gimmicky is exactly how I feel about most of the fundamental changes Firaxis has made to VII. Personally I think ages (splitting the game into 3 short rounds), civ swapping (yuck), and detaching leaders from their civilizations to give us completely out of left field leader choices with the ultimate goal of peddling expensive DLC were wholly unnessecary.

i actually agree with you on the modding and the AI. that was perhaps my biggest gripe with civ 6 and even 5 at times. the vox populi mod completely changed that for me in 5 but the devs locking up some crucial code for 6 really stunted its growth.

i will say the ages might be the best thing logistically for the game. instead of the devs now having to focus on the AI integrating all these mechanics from 4000BC to 2050AD can be an extremely daunting and maybe even near impossible. breaking it up in ages allows the devs to really focus on that AI within those certain ages which have different mechanics and the like. i think it’s actually a plus for the devs.

i’ll be honest when i first heard about the detached leaders and civ swapping i was a little hesitant. but i played human kind where i could start off as Qing China and end up as America which is so much worse than Civ 7s implementation. the detached leaders are growing on me a bit but like i said, its to each their own
