Apologies if this has been suggested and/or actually made before. I did a search and couldn't find anything.
This is an idea that I don't have the skillz to do myself, and would be happy for anyone else to have a go.
Sports Mod
The Sports Mod borrows the basic religion mechanic, with civs being able to invent sports, although by building a World Wonder rather than discovering a tech. The civ, and anyone with Open Borders with the civ, can then construct a stadium in order to play the sport. These buildings provide 1 health (from the exercise in playing) and 1 happiness. In addition, the civ with the appropriate Wonder gets a gold from each city that plays the sport. (Not sure whether Open Borders should be necessary to collect this income.) The Wonder of course acts as a stadium in its home city.
Civs that play the same sports should also get a +1 bonus in their relationships if they have Open Borders. This bonus should probably not e accumulative, i.e. you still only get +1 even if you play lots of the same sports.
I have come up with the following 5 sports. As you can see, they are a little Anglo-centric. I have not yet worked out which technologies should make the Wonders available, but have indicated when roughly they should appear:
OLYMPIC GAMES - founded by construction of Olympia - allows construction of Racetrack - Ancient era
JOUSTING - Field of the Cloth of Gold - Jousting Field - Medieval
TENNIS - Wimbledon - Tennis Court - Renaissance
TEST CRICKET - Lord's - Cricket Ground - Industrial
FOOTBALL - Wembley Stadium - Football Pitch - Modern
Again, sorry if this has been done before. I would welcome comments, especially if you think that it would upset gameplay too much.
