I think it would be a good idea if Civ III had an A10 attack plane and an Apache helicopter.

The A10 is similar to an aircraft but it was made to kill tanks and is tough. Once one was hit by a SAM missle and it survived and got home fine. I don't know what it's specs should be, but in real life it was meant to kill tanks. Maybe it should have a special ability to kill tanks better but is not that effective against Infantry units. Since it is an aircraft it should only get 1 attack per turn to be balanced, and it's weakness is that it is easily killed by a fighter aircraft.

As for the Apache it should be able to fly on land and water but not the type of system that it is now. It should have high attack power (more than an A10) and it is better at killing infantry than an A10 is but it should have a low defense so it can be killed by a tanks counter attack or an infantry. I don't know what it's specs should be though, but I think it should have high attack low defense because in real life helicopters are very suspectable to shoulder fired missles from infantry, and if a tank hides it could pop out and shoot it down with it's cannon.

What suggestions you have?

i dont think there are settings that you can set so a unit is better vs a particular type of unit and sux vs another kind...is there?

I doubt a tank can shot down a helicopter with its canon

However, if you want to do it with the current Civ3, you can make it an air unit with movement point. In this case, you need to move it back to the city to end its turn as any land unit can kill an air unit with one hit at the moment

If you want to make it a tough helicopter (considering the fact that attack heli like Hind can take lots of hits before it goes down) then you need to make it a land unit. But making it a land unit will make it unable to move across water. :(

In real life what use are tanks if they can't defend themselves from most things like helicopters? A Modern Armor in RL (an Abrams) can shoot +10 miles away, past the horizonal vision when looking into the distance.

I was thinking that some tanks have anti-aircraft SAMs, because in real life they do and probably in addition to the .50 cal machine gun and the 100mm cannon. In real life is the tank really an effective weapon in war or is it stupid?

I don't like it how Civ III doesn't have the system of Civ II where you can have a helicopter that is like a land unit but it can cross over water and have hitpoints too. It defeats the purpose if Civ III doesn't have a 'realistic' type of helicopter like Civ II had.

Yes, but uh how does a tank defend itself in real life from helicopters? Or it just doesn't, a tank needs to be defended by something else against helicopters because tanks suck against copters. I think there is more tanks the army has than helicopters.

Is it like this in real life?

Tanks (modern ones) are good at attacking infantry, buildings, fortified positions, missle launcher tanks, jeeps, artillery, and excel in open ground, but are at a disadvantage in urban and forest, helicopters, and planes.

Tanks vs infantry (open ground) = good
Tanks vs infantry (urban or forest) = BAD!!!
Tanks vs helicopter = BAD!!!
Tanks vs Artillery/MRLS = good(?)
Tanks vs tanks = good (or equal)
Tanks vs buildings = good
Tanks vs Airplanes = BAD!!!
Tanks vs entrenched infantry = good(?)
Tanks vs Jeeps = good

Helicopter vs tanks = good! (can tanks defend themselves from helicopters at all?)
Helicopter vs plane = BAD!!!
Helicopter vs infantry (forest or urban) = unsure (they can be shot down by a stinger missle, yet they can't get hit by a tank cannon?)

What in real life is the role of tanks?
Tell me if I'm wrong.
