OK, what causes this unhappiness message!!! I am getting this when I place the cursor over the happy/unhappy icon in the city screen. Don't remember seeing it before, what causes it, and how do I get rid of it.

One source of this  is if you get a random event that goes something to the effect that some kook is spreading heretical ideas. You can either: banish the kook and get extra :) for 10 turns or add him as a super scientist or found an academy with him. If you choose the last option, there's a permanent 2  that you can't get rid of. There are probably other sources of this extra , but that's just one possibility I can think of off the top of my head.

Not 100% certain, so take this guess with the appropriate unit O'Salt:

It's (un)happiness specific to the city; the opposite of "OH YEAH!". One place it would appear is the Final Frontier scenario, if you are using the Mechanized Workforce civic.

It also shows up due to Papal lack of favor in the Charlemagne scenario. Get the Pope to like you more and the AAARRRGHHH!!! will go away. You want to spread Christianity anyway, so that's not a big problem.

When I got an event that gave me +2 :) in every city, it came up as OH YEAH!! So I would guess that an event that causes unhappiness would give you the AAAAAARRRRGGH!!

the OH YEAH!!! is when you remember to buy kool-aid. the AAAAAAARGH is because you forgot :crazyeye:

I believe its anything they don't have a specific message for. so something besides...

overcrowding
drafting
war weariness
slavery
wanting to rejoin motherland
etc.

likely a random event

From my experience most random event produce "We can not forget you cruel oppression" type of Unhappy - the same like whips, following the same rules.

Thanks to all for the responses.

I think this is the likely cause as I had one of teh Kook events just before and took a permanent scientist although the  did eventually go away. I tended to ignore them but in this game every happy face was extremely important.

I took some time to review the code today, and discovered that I was in error here. Also please consider that the comments which follow stem from reading the code, not testing the outcomes.

There are actually two terms - one is "extra (un)happiness for the city", and the other is "extra (un) happiness for the player". So happys from Traits and Techs fall into this pile, as well as happys from events.

It looks like the relevant events are Jail, Nuclear Protest, and two Controversial Philosophers, which sounds like a match for madscientist's game.

(Note: Therefore, I was completely off base when I suggested it might be related to civics. That message pair is happy: "great city of ours" and anger: "open spaces")

VoiceOfUnreason, you have no idea how much i have learned so much from your posts. bonus points for telling us when you're guessing, and coming back to those threads to clear things up if you find out what you posted was in error.

+18 we appreciate the years you have provided us with great information
