Here's a "Huge" (160x160) map of Europe for your gaming pleasure.
Abilard's Europe

What makes this map different form the plethora of other posted Euro-maps?

1) Most of the other maps devote a lot of space to the steppe between the Dniester and the Urals and to the Northern Sahara. Unless you're planning a scenario about the Golden Horde or WW2 (Rommel's campaigns) I believe that this is a lot of wasted space. My map focuses on middle Europe where most of the significant events of Western history occured.

2) Many maps neglect the fact that Civ3 maps are an orthagonal view... in other words you're not looking straight down on the map but at an angle. Many world maps look "correct" but incorrectly assume that you are looking straight down on the geography in question. What these maps end up doing is shortening east-west distances and elongating north-south distances (in a Europe scenario this would over emphasize east-west conflict (Mongols and Crusades) and under emphasize north-south conflicts (the reconquista and 17th century religious wars)). This map is made with the orthagonal view in mind. Because of this some areas may appear "squeezed" in the north-south direction... just remember that it's an orthagonal view and not top down.

Here are views of England, Spain, the Agean Sea, and the whole map from my map.

Hey great job, i must say this map of Europe is one of my favorites that has been posted. But whats with the random irrigation and roads? There is some irrigation inbetween France and Germany, and around Germany/Poland. There is also a road square i saw in Russia. But otherwise i really like it. :goodjob:

Lord C- just noticed that too. After making the map I went right into building a scenario and then changed my mind and cleaned it up (or so I thought).

Thanks for the Kudos! I'm working on a scenario (Europe 100 to 2000... pretty big scope) to use with the map. Hopefully I'll post it by summer's end.

Please feel free to let me know about any other needed corrections (more accurate placement of resources, etc). I want to make the most accurate and playable Europe map for the Civ community.:)

Well all you need to do is press the clean map button, it will clear everything but the map and its resources and such.

 ok i hurt my ego with that last reply.... Um clean map is just so you dont have to see the irrigation and such. Everybody point and giggle. Only been using the editor since it came out.

A little thing I noticed which niggled me. Why the hell is North Eastern Scotland covered in tundra? In that area there is Wick and Thurso. Both large fishing ports and take it from me - it is NOT covered with a thick layer of permafrost!

Hey, if I were Scotish I would be pretty upset (not to mentioned thoroughly niggled). B.W.- great point and I will update the map by removing tundra... perhaps I should add some fish? I love this type of continuing so that the map can evolve in accuracy and playability.

Yeah. Fish would be quite a nice addition. And thanks. :-p *gets annoyed too easy*

Hay this map looks good abiliard I like the concept of tilting the tiles I did the same thing in taltho's Globe World note that the height is 200 the width 150.
Oh and I found out that one can take it to a definite, the minimap will cut in half when this ballance is upset too much verticaly and horizontaly, it's quite interesting

Thanks for taking a look...

As for the tilt in the tiles, that's actually something built into the game: e.g.- the tiles are much smaller top to bottom than they are left to right. So, if you want to represent a land mass that is a 10 x 10 square, you otta use ten tiles vertically and ten tiles horitzontally. This actually makes a land mass that "looks" like a rectangle, but in terms of play and movement it's a square. As I look across most of the historical / earth maps posted, very very very few map makers take note of this. There are lots of good "looking" maps with their aspect ratios all screwed up.

(time to step off the soap box)

I'm not sure I understand your second paragraph about the balance and the minimap...

Is what I mean is that if you put in 289x120 the minimap will decrease the hight, somwhat like a lengthening, by decreasing the height the rectangl becomes more elongated kind'a like this screen I'm typing in now, verses more square on the vertical height it is elongatet on the horizontal width.
Did you ever get your download right?
