If I attack from a mountain against a unit on e.g. plains, do I get an offensive bonus due to the terrain or is the terrain bonus a purely defensive thing?

No, you do not. The only terrain bonus is, as you said, a purely defensive thing.

But I must admit, I seem to have better luck attacking from higher ground.

That is either imagination or pure luck ;)

However of course, you may suffer reduced losses, due to a greater chance of surviving a counter attack.

raspberry. All those defensive odds implemented by the designers for terrain are nothing more than an attempt to smooth out strange combat results, and unfortunately it's putting attention on the wrong detail.

In the scenarios I play I don't give any defense odds for terrain other than hills, mountains, marsh, roads and cities. Plus odds for being in a Plain??? What the freak is that about??? That's just a designer trying to adjust the wild results from a flat probability (curveless) and missing the mark.

Bring back the curve. Multiple PRNGs in every combat. Bring on the cabbage-throwers, I expect you'll think I'm putting down this great game, when I'm not; I'm only suggesting how it might be improved...

Yes, it is! But once you get doing something....it's hard to break!

Of course, I don't sacrifice a turn to get on the mountain. Only do that if I have roads/railroads to it, and it won't cost me the attack that turn.
