first off, thanks for all the replies to my other couple of posts. won my second game, moved up now to regent.....

anyhows, Emmet Samms mentioned something about being able to get rid of some of the victory conditions, but he didn't mention the 2050AD condition - which i really don't like. for me, it's a lame ending (just my opnion, of course). is there any way to stop this type of 'victory'?? if so, would make me velly velly happy.

thx in advance

Unfortunately no and so far I have found all the endings lame. For the record this is not a rant, just stating my opinion. I don't care much about the endings, just the game play...although nice endings are nice!
Domination (where you control 90% or whatever....very disappointing), and Culture are the ones I have seen so far.

But you can keep playing after 2050 until you kill everyone, you will just not get any points.

i don't really worry too much about score, so after 2050ad, what would happen, say, if you went on and built the spaceship? would the computer play appropriately - i realise i won't 'win', as far as the game is concerned, but how would the computer play?? or if i built the un, would they still vote....you get my drift.

or am i the only one that has a problem with the 2050ad, and should i shut my face and just get on with the game??

also, what's this Masters of Orion i keep reading about, number three is due for release soon - it sounds excellent. were the other 2 successful?? as an avid computer gamer going back to the spectrum zx-81 (and tabletop wargames before then - hexagonal maps and all that :)), i feel a bit embarrassed that it seems to have completely slipped through my net - you're now going to tell me it was a multi-million selling game and make me feel more stupid.

David,

If it's the forced ending in 2050AD that you're concerned about, you are not the only one.

Go to the Civ Fanatics' Forums page and look for a section called "Civ3 - Creation & Customization". Somewhere in there is at least one utility program by which you can change the mandatory end date. The one I use is called TCG Editor written by H. Winkels.

After downloading it and unzipping it, the file you use is called Civ3Sav Edit.exe. Run this and load one of your saved Civ3 games into it. You change the retirement date on that saved file, which takes less than 30 seconds to do. From there, it remembers the new end date for the rest of that game.

If it's the rather anti-climactic ending you are not happy with, then this won't help, it's the same set of screens, just a different date.

Hope this helps

I too hate the 2050 ending very much.

I'm a perfectionist when it comes to empire building & this approach takes a long time.

Also, I like fighting with tanks & bombers, carriers & nukesubs, not with catapaults :). by 2050, i've often still got a LOT of game left to play (humungous world maps). BY 1900 the game has just ripened.

Imagine buying a packet of maltesers & having to throw it away after just 5 bites  .

ah, dinorius, you've helped me turn a great game with a huge flaw into, well, just a great game.

many thanks - i've left a message for the man himself thanking him - what a star.

i'm surprised that more people didn't have a moan about the forced ending - not having it as an option was just too dumb for words. it's ruined a couple of games of mine so far - i don't even count those games as played, if you understand what i mean. i 've played 2 games proper, (on my third now), and 2 games with that ending.

the game i'm playing now has just been, i think, saved thanks to this little treasure of a utility. i've gone up a level, and i could see the end-date looming, where once again i wouldn't have chance to really use modern day units/iimprovements etc.

i've changed to date to 3000ad, but as far as i'm concerned, i'm never gonna' see that ending again.

yes!!!!

i was just typing my reply when bigbird put his post up.....that was exactly the point i was trying to make.....so much game to play when you reach the end. now for the first time i can look forward to a modern game that lasts for more than a few turns. jeez, i feel like i've gone out and bought a new game :D

three cheers for mr.winkels.....

Yup, I dont like throwing away a bag of malteazerzzzz !!!!!!!

Thanks Dino!!

The main reason for the forced ending is to provide some kind of bar for comparing scores. Otherwise score comparisson becomes utterly meaningless. This is even more true in that the scoring system actually seems to favor you waiting to the last moment to take the win, as it is possible to get more points by just clicking end turn than you would get from an early win.

fair comment etj...speaking for myself though, i've never looked at one gamescore, through all the civilizations I, II and III. personally, it means nothing to me. i know there are those players that are so good, they always beat the computer, so scoring is the only way of judging their game - it's just that i'm most definately not one of 'em.

That's good, I'm glad I helped someone.

Actually you wanna spend some more time browsing that Customization section, you can find some very nifty utilities and mod packs in there. I'm impressed by how damn clever some people are. Anyway, if you hate the vile effects of corruption (and living in Pattaya, I suppose you would after a while :) ) then look for the mod by a guy called Dreifels. It's off-topic to extol it's virtues here, so I'll stop. Enjoy your newly extended Civ3 and don't guzzle too many Singhas before playing!
