I especially like working on huge maps except for one problem. I usually produce one or two workers per city. When my empire gets gigantic with so many cities and so many workers, including many captured ones, the time it takes to wait for all these units becomes annoying. I turned off animations and everything. What really bothers me is that in Alpha Centuari I had the option to not recenter on all automated units. This was a godsend in that the turn could end quite quickly when the computer did not need to work to recenter the map on every single terraformer. This is just a suggestion. Also I miss the Exploration command of SMAC. I may be just dumb, but I thought SMAC was fling from the Civ series and many elements of SMAC were put in Civ3. I fail to see the ease of use from SMAC in Civ3. I still love Civ3 though. I just would like to see this helped somehow ;)

I know what you talkin' about... On one of my games, when i see it's starting the workers frenzy I turning my TV on...

I have the same problem, and I am using a lame solution. At first only do the important stuff, like build roads to resources, connect your cities + important irrigation/mining. Later when you get railroad units no longer show their moves when travelling on them, so I put them on automate and they railroad away for like 30-40 turns (dependent on your landmass and no. of. workers). I had 60 workers spawn over 5 turns and it took them about 30-40 turns to railroad most of North America and do other stuff - this was on the huge world map.

Lame, but it works ;)

But does anyone remember the ease of Terraformers in SMAC. There was an option to just not recenter the map on them making it go by much faster.

I never used the no recenter option. I didn't notice it happening though.
