I noticed that I have unlocked 32 of 287 achievement's with 640 hours played......
What the heck!? What have I been doing?
How I can play that long and have so few is beyond me.

Or you have "No Reward Popups" selected in Options. This prevents most achievements from triggering. That said a lot of the achievements are based around the Scenarios and the DLC's, so if you don't have play/have those then there is a pretty low ceiling anyway.

Have you been trying for the achievements, though? I have over 1,700 hours in CiV and I've only got 41% of the achievements (none of the scenario or multiplayer ones, for starters).

It's quite easy not to get many if you're not bothered about them.

24% in 307 hours for me. I think it's not too bad... or is it?

There is only one in MP, so thats not gonna make the difference. 3 are related to modding but they are broken

I've got 212 on 287, but i do activly persue them. And sometimes set up a game so just i can get them (or even use the achievement saves here). Like for the civ-specific ones. Need to sink an ironclad with a turtle ship? Start an advanced game, give an ironclad to a CS, sink it. 2 min of work.

Or start a game in renaissance on archipelago duel, you as william, a settler AI as isabella. Build a few seabeggars, and you've got it.

Im now working on the vanilla scenario ones (korea), although i know that ill be almost never able to get the emperor+ ones in Fall of Rome and ItR.

Just go and actually look what all of them are on Steam...

To get a solid amount of them you'll basically have to go hunting to acquire them; they encourage you to try different play styles and scenarios. There are many achievements for each scenario, a different achievement for each map style, map size, victory condition, and typically two for each civilization, among other things.

Personaly i sometimes try to get them actively as well (choose a specific Civ or whatever) but for me most of them seem to be broken. I am sure i have won as the Norwegians as Japan etc.

So i asked myself if maybe these "Vanilla" Achievements only work in Vanilla??
Maybe someone can confirm that?

I feel that the achievements had good intentions, but they went way overboard. IMO they would have been much better done with each achievement being more of a big deal. As it is, it's like they went through and made a list of literally every single little thing you could do or game options. So it's kind of crazy how many there are. So much so that I don't get a sense of accomplishment when I get one. Which should have been the point.

If there had been, say 1/4 to 1/3 as many, and as bobbo said if each one encouraged me to try a different play style, then I probably would be going out and doing just that. As it is, I haven't bothered. I try different styles for variety, not because there are achievements for them.

As said before, some of the trophies are preposterously specific. I'm sure everyone has a story just like mine: conquering an Egyptian city like it's no big deal, and then the achievement pops up, "The Last Crusade." Huh, wonder what that is, I'll Shift+Tab and check it out: "Conquer the city that built Petra with a Landship." Hmmm... how would I even plan that to happen?

The ones I hate are the number based ones like sinking 357 ships as England or 1000 temples. I've been playing so many hours and built so many temples, and I'm still 300 away (I think, not sure).

Some of the scenario ones are pretty bad, but at least most of them make sense. There's the one about capturing a Sassanid city as the Celts, which I've never been able to do.

And then there's Kill an English spy as Russia. You have to play a game where England sends a spy to one of your cities, and have a spy there, and hope it you catch them. There's so much chance involved. Or Longest name ever, which makes you build 33 cities (less if you know some tricks).

I suppose in their defense, Civ5 is a game with a notorious amount of people who log 1000+ hours. They'd be disappointed if they unlocked every possible achievement in 2 years. That being said, it also discourages experimenting with the mods, since those negate any progress towards any achievement, meaning you're eliminating some of the enjoyment, regardless of what you do...

A lot of the achievements are included as references to popular culture or history, or just because there was an opportunity to use a cool name: From Russia With Love, The Last Crusade, Longest Name Ever, He Threw a Car At My Head, Capture of Brielle, Apocalypse Now, Greek Fire, the list goes on... They're there for fun, for those players that get the references (like My Little Pony, which I had to have explained to me since I was ignorant of Catherine's supposed *ahem* interests!), not as a measure of how well you are doing at the game.

These are the sorts of achievements that you're pretty much never going to get unless you set out to get them deliberately - not because they're hard, but because they're so specific. I think it's tough to get far beyond 50% of the achievements unless you're shooting for them specifically or you play all the scenarios as all factions, all map sizes and on all difficulty levels. In other words, hours don't much come into it; it's whether you spend a significant proportion of those hours chasing achievements or not.

Well Catherine never had her way with horses, its a rumour spreaded by her son Ivan who hated her. She did have quite an appetite though

Well, that's what achievements are really meant for. You'll get the basic ones ("Win a game as X leader"), but they can also toss in some really weird ones, just so you get a surprise by doing something unusual.

My favorite was in the game Deus Ex: Human Revolution. You find a basketball outdoor court between a couple buildings and if you actually pick up the ball & manage to make the shot, you get an achievement. Has nothing to do with the game whatsoever, the devs just thought it'd be fun to give you an achievment if you decided to try it on a whim. :D

I'm actually disappointed in a few of the achievements in Brave New World, I think they're offensive. Particularly Strength Through Joy, but others as well. My Little Pony was a bit tasteless, but it was kind of funny.
