I've recently been playing Rome: Total War, and found a few things I would like to see incorporated into Civ4:

  • Each city with a port trades with other cities with ports, bringing in money, as well as allowing trading of resources.
  • Cities trade to bring in resources, as well as gold. If you units block all roads into and out of cities, it cuts off the money.
  • Unit combat bonuses vs other units. Spearmen get a bonus against cavalry, cavalry against infantry, infantry against spearman, etc.
  • Missile units (archers, skirmishers, javelineers) are bombard units only, no attack or defense.
  • Elephants, and other units, can scare enemy troops (making them fight less well),
  • Other units on the tile being attacked (or on the tile that the attacker is attacking from) are factored into the combat. Perhaps units on nearby tiles also have some sort of (less important) impact.
  • All units can retreat (renamed "rout"). Once it does though, it will recieve massive casualties by the enemy. You can not control when your units rout.
  • Each unit has a certain number of soldiers, and takes casulties in each battle, rather than losing health. Units with more soldiers are more effective in battle (ie units with less soldiers have attack/defense disadvantages, not just health ones).

It would be great if we could get some of these in Civ4.
