I'm trying to improve my gameplay in mp. There are several strategies and scenarios that recur that are maddening and difficult to overcome. I was hoping to gather some specific ideas and principles that would help advance an average player to the next level. Two major stumbling blocks seem to come up in every loss.

Getting behind in tech: Sometimes from a rusher (Zulu, Chinese, whatever) By focusing my efforts on bw and getting an archer army--rushers get serious real estate advantage. It seems as though even if I'm using the Chinese and hyper expanding to as many trade squares as I can, I am behind by several tech's and not defending my cities properly. I also go right to hbr and try and get a horse army to create space--but a Zulu army fully fortified on my squares has a defense of 10.5 (trees)There is nothing worse than getting your horse army crushed after 60 hammers of agony. By the time I get some cities out--the results are merely academic.

City Management: The other issue that comes up is staking a good piece of territory and expanding successfully--but, against good players I still get out-teched. In using the Chinese I expand like a virus and still get behind. Are they specializing cities or optimizing many small cities? I try and get the EITC bonus--but this sometimes is not enough--I have every city tech heavy and don't have enough to defend with the latest defense units.

I have probably played about 60 games that didn't glitch for some reason. So that is the extent of my experience. Hopefully some of you can relate to these scenarios that make you want to rage quit, and have some input that can raise the average level of play.
