Hello.

i keep going broke. i always seem to run out of production by what the finical adviser tells me.

its seems my game blows up when i go on the attack mode. the more cities i take over
the more money i lose. i think i get the happy part but the conquer part kills every time

when i start a new game should i keep my workers building farms and such as fast as they can build them?

if i am running out of production. does that mean i need to build mines?

what do i do with building Maintenance? that always kills me by the 16 hundreds.

thanks for helping!!!

Build more trading posts; trading post spam has shown to be quite powerful. Also, don't build buildings and units you don't need, if there is nothing you need, build wealth. (Actually it appears it's more effective to build units and then disband them for a little cash than building straight wealth) Mines aren't very good, usually farming riverside hills and trading posts on hills are better.

When things are looking really bad, go to each of your cities and select the option to focus on wealth in the upper right. Your production will suffer, but when you fix the other things you can switch back to default or production focus.

When taking over other cities, have a worker follow behind the lines and build roads to your new cities asap. The trade income really helps, and sometimes all it takes is one road to the nearest city and the rest get hooked up as well. Sometimes it takes a little time for those new holdings to start making more money than they were costing.

I wouldn't worry about production, really, it seems to be a common complaint that things take very long to build and tile yields are too low.

Another common complaint I hear a lot is about the inability to sell buildings, so sometimes maintenance can get out of hand if you didn't plan ahead (also puppet states tend to build too many useless buildings too). There is a social policy in the Order tree that reduces building maintenance, but that's usually available too late to help.

Lots of tips here -

Short version:

Production is much harder to come by in CiV, making gold more valuable. Plains are awesome. Rivers are awesome. Don't build stuff you don't REALLY need. Don't build 'wealth,' build scouts and disband them. Don't use up your forests early unless you need the chop, wait and build lumberyards. Roads cost money, only build them to connect cities. Railroads aren't really worth it, except to allow units to travel all the way across huge empires. Abuse the AI, it doesn't have feelings (weeee!).

Yeah, the scout trick is a nifty one, although I feel that gold and research gain from hammers needs to be looked at. It's such a pitiful amount that it isn't even worth doing :(.
