Hey guys..

I have had civ3 for long time but only played as chieftan. I want to increase to higher levels... what do I need to learn to do better?

You can post more specific questions in that thread, and will get good advice from other players.

Then resist all temptation to modify the game until you can win handily on Regent of above.

Try to get off Cheiftain and Warlord ASAP because the penalties applied against your rivals really do incapacitate them to the point that they are not worthy opponents or viable trade partners.

At cheiftain level, everything the AI does costs twice as much as it costs for you. Your warriors are 10 shields and the enemy must pay 20 shields; you grow at 20 food units per person and they have to have 40.

And if you're playing with accelerated production under chieftain the AI spends 4 times what you spend for everything.

Accelerated production applies to both the human and AI, so the AI still takes twice as long, not 4 times.

Nope, just checked it. Investigated AI city on chieftain with Accelerated production. Takes me 10 food to grow, AI 20 food. Takes me 10 shields for a spearman and AI 20 shields.

With accelerated production, if you play at chieftain, then the AI will be building/growing at the normal human's pace (without accelerated production, or what your used to playing in previous patches), but the human would be building/growing at a pace higher than Deity. Hmm Bamspeedy you're confusing me. According to Killer's FAQ YOU pointed out that under chieftain accelerated production applies only to the player. I've never played acc prod under chieftain and I'm not using my home computer right to now to verify this.

I see. A problem with how it is worded, makes it harder to understand.

What I meant by that is the AI on chieftain would take 20 food to grow (the same amount of food it takes you to grow WITHOUT using accelerated production). And you would take only 10 food to grow (which is faster than the Deity AI, where it needs 12 food to grow WITHOUT using accelerated production).

Without using Accelerated production it takes the AI 40 food to grow on chieftain, and the human 20.
