After GL, Elite Units kick butt!

I didn't notice this mentioned in the huge thread on how weak Elite Units were in attacking. I found it to be true also. However, after getting a GL in my last game, I sat on it to rush something later. I was in no hurry, and I was producing armies every ten turns from the Academy/Pentagon (?). Any how, I began to notice how tough my elite units really were. They were kicking butt!

lucky you - my elite units are a waste of time - great as veterans but as sson as they become elite they get wiped out (even after resting/healing). Must be me.......:(

I've never seen the combat problems that some people have. There are always strange results from time to time, but they seem distributed equally between my units, and between me and the enemy civs. I find that an Elite unit with 4 HP left performs the same as a Veteran unit, for example.

I'm sorry, but anyone who seriously thinks that elite units somehow "die more easily" than veteran units (other then it being a result of their poor tactics in misusing elite units) is badly mistaken.

I challenge anyone to produce a saved game where an elite unit attacks and dies, but a veteran unit with the same or less hitpoints attacks and wins.

(note I said attacks and wins, retreating doesn't count).

unfortunately I dont have a saved game available but my observation is that elite units definitely do not perform any better than veteran units.

Now I can accept I may not be using them to best advatage (I do not go in for warmongering so am not as good as a lot of people here at that side of the game) but even making sure they have retreated to a city with barracks and have healed fully I still have not noticed any significant difference over vet units in how well elite units perform.

However I do not make drug taking accusations against anyone which I find offensive even if it is meant as a 'joke' .

IIRC, someone has tested this some time ago and got similar results.

Homewer, I'm just a OT-veteran, not Civ3-veteran, what do I know.

Hawkster: Elite units don't perform better than veteran units, except for them having an extra hitpoint, which allows them to last a bit longer. I tend to think that people are inclined to see their elite units as dying faster, simply because that's the way people tend to remember things. Just because you can't produce a saved game doesn't mean you're wrong of course, but all anyone has to do is produce a single saved game, out of so many examples, and that will prove I am wrong.

Also, I am sorry if you found my original post offensive, I have modified it to a wording which I hope will be more to your liking.

the wars i fight generally go like this:
1. if my offensive units are weak compared to their defensive units: cav v infantry.

I send in vetran first then my elites last

2. if my offensive units are strong v their def units, tanks v riflemen, i send in elites first then the vets to get them up to elite status.

Also, looking at their terrain helps to judge the situation.

Do they kick more butt than before you get a GL?

No. I believe this is something Firaxis had to do to prevent an "unbalanced" amount of GLs being produced. I mean 1/16 chances are still pretty good, much better than a THE lottery.

Yes. I've noticed this too. Too bad, as I believe I read that each elite unit will only produce one GL.
