Age of the earth question

Whenever you're customizing your map and it gives you options on the age of the earth, what's the difference between them?

I think it has to do with the amount of erosion, which means the older the earth, the less mountains and hills.

The older the planet, the more "random" the terrains and continents will be. For instance, on a 3 billion yo planet you're most likely to find larger groups of the same terrain.
I'm not sure of the details though.
