For the 2nd strait game in a row, I have seen about 9 or so out of 17 total civs in the game I'm playing all gang up on me. I have tried to maintain fair and decent relations as often as possible where and when I can. But it does not seem to matter.

By the 1300s I am bombarded with war declorations and half well over half of the civs in the game declaring on me. It almost seems like a bug. But I have all the updated patches.

Farther more, when this happened was when I had about 9 Longbowmen in every city and was starting to crank out a couple Cataphracts on every turn with my productions cities. Plus multitudes of left over axe man.

So this agression doesn't make sense to me.

What could it be? Is it my holy city or my cities with multiple wonders? Is it that I have founded a religoun that no one else currently has as their state religoun?

What are ways to keep all these AI civs from being so agressive if you're trying to go for a Cultural victory?

Have you ever had AIs gang up on you like crazy such as that? I mean this is really crazy! This is twice in a row!

For the Record: Terra Huge Map, Ancient start, 17 Civs with 1 more open for Barbarians, Noble level.

Do you know if any of the civs are vassals of the other? If so, all it takes is for the Master to declare war on you and the rest will too.

One possibility is the Apostolic Palace. The members can vote to all declare war on a civ that doesn't have the AP religion, which can have this effect.

The other possibility is there are a couple of civs dragging a large number of vassals and colonies into their wars.

No, I have built the Apostolic Palace myself. And I can't get any body to vote to stop the war against me. A couple have voted "NEVER!" and defied the resolution while the rest voted no.

As for Vassalls, there is curretnly only one vassall in the game and that is Ragnar, to which he is a vassall to my ally George Washington. They had been fighting nearly the entire game. Washington has been at war with 2 other nations the whole game along with Bismark who is also an ally, so neither one have been free enough to help me in my defense. The other couple civs like Sitting Bull where I have decent relations with refuse to even consider war. The option is redded out. I can't even bribe them.

Also I had built up pleased relations with Ramsesse by giving in to his demands/requests the whole game, but just like the last game he backstabbed me and was one of the multitudes to dogpile DOW on me. This is also at different turns from each other. Not all at the same time, but within about 5 seperate turns.

In a game with many civs it's just impossible to please veryone - some will ask you to stop trade or DoW on others - if you comply you get  from one side, if you refuse the one asking will get angry...

The idea is not to try to please all - you will end up at best having everyone on cutious - maybe worse. Choose a small couple (often 2 hence called traingle diplo - but in a game with 17 AI perhaps 3 or 4) and try to get them friendly - a few strong friends, even if you also get strong enemies, will help you more, than everyone just cautious.

The problem is where I have tried that in the early game, those civs turn out to hate each other and thus hate me for having had open borders with them. I get the demands to cease trading with them all the time and even prior they both give me the lasting "you have traded with our worst enemy". The really strange about this is that I checked the glance screen when I recieved the demands to cancel my deals with them, I checked the relations screen to see what their relationship modifiers were and they weren't even in the negative yet. They each had a +1 -1 modifier applied relationship with each other. WTH? :crazyeye:

Yes sometimes there are games, where the situation developes in a way, that everything you try in diplo is to no good... In those only superior firepower does help :D
