After reading some of the post in this forum, I couldn't help noticing that many people are saying that the computer cheats. Is this true? If it is, is this just for the higher levels or does it happen in the chieftin level also?

I personally find it sad how people can't make AIs to beat human players without cheating.

The AI gets certain bonuses or penalties based on the difficulty level you choose. Lower difficulties actually penalize the AI, while higher levels give a bonus to them.

These adjustments are factored into the amount of food needed to grow a city, the amount of sheilds needed to build an item, the amount of beakers needed for a tech and other various elements.

I believe the Emperor level is the one where everything is equal between the human and AI players.

"cheating" is really all programmers have to work with.We all can't afford a deep blue....which is what you need to really get a challenge.
I wonder how deep blue would due in a game of civ?

[civ3swipe]the nice thing about civ2 is you can get a real fun and challenging game because it has MULTIPLAY[/civ3swipe]

:p

I am working on an AI as we speak for a naval wargame and let me say that it take a lot of work to get it to "playable". Smart is another matter.

The Civ II AI isn't all that bright as most AI's aren't that bright because it takes a great deal of coding to handle all of the "weird" things that a player will do that a programmer would never think of.

An Example:

A friend of mine likes the game Harpoon. One day he decided to push the envelope by doing some wacky things. He ran his task force into Iceland only to find that he went "through" Iceland. No damage to the ships and no time lost. Who would have thought that a person would purposely try to run himself aground? No one coded against that event and the default effects was that the ships passed through the hexes as if they were water.

Now this doesn't mean that the Civ II AI couldn't have been smarter, it would just take more effort and disk space.
