AI double units

I love(hate) the game, and have played literally hundreds of maps.

I've noticed a bug however(I think), and it has taken some of the fun out of it.

Normally when the production box is filled up a single unit is produced, right? Well 3 times i have caught the AI producing 2 instead of one. I would bet it happens a lot, but these are the only times i can be pretty positive about.

1st time-a civ had a single city on my continent, size 3, coastal, all desert squares. At some point he declares war and along with boatloads of cavalry here and there, he also attacked with 2 longbowmen from that one city. Not that suspicious at first, but he kept doing it. 2 longbows every 5 turns, with no boats going in or out.

2nd time- I had an enemy city completely surrounded after my initial assault failed to take it. I did, however, manage to kill off all the crusaders. I used lots of trebuchets so i got to see all his defenders cycle through as i bombarded them down. The city had the Knights Templar wonder so while i built up to finish taking the city, my surrounding units were attacked by 2(two) crusaders(presumably produced by the wonder, when it should have only been one). Before the city was taken, my units were attacked again by another pair of crusaders.

3rd- My most recent, and most compelling(or disheartening) example was on a tiny map, about 15 turns into a match(long enough to build 2 warriors and start on a third). I found my closest opponents capital in the first direction i began exploring.(He was REALLY close by) So i parked that warrior on a mountain that was conveniently in just the right spot where i could see his city and still be outside his border. A couple more turns go by, and i see his size 3 city become a size 1, and not one, but two(2) settlers with warrior escorts come out of the city and head in opposite directions.

This bug is kinda discouraging. I mean, i like a challenge, but double production just seems unfair. Has anyone else seen this? or maybe have an explanation?

Never seen this before.
Do you have a save?

I might got some explanations :

1:
AI can sometimes depending on the force outside the gates wait with an attack, so depending on moneyflow, built one and rushed one during those 5 turns, and when it have 2 feel it got enough for the attack.

2.
Only thing i can think of is you missed one bombed unit that healed up

3:
The AI send out settlers unescorted if no miltary units are around. When a military unit get close the settler goes back to town. Since your scouting unit was outside the border, it doesnt se the whole 9 squares so an unescorted settler could have come back to town the turn before and the headed out with an escort at the same time as the produced settler went out with another escort.

Edit: Welcome to Civfanatics.

Nope, no save available. If i see it happen again, ill be sure to hang on to it. Those are all plausible explanations, thanks for the input.

What until this:

:spear:

when a lowly Spear stands tall against your Modern Armor.

Great result for someone else to have!

I have no doubt that your observations are correct. Don't think of it as unfair, simply the AI trying to provide a challenge. On the other side of the coin, I've seen the AI cross my border with overwhelming numbers and fumble around giving me opportunities to trap or lead it away from obvious strategic goals. It's not about a fair game, it's about you developing strategies and tactics to succeed in the goals you set. It was an eye-openner for me when I stopped thinking of the AI as an opponent to beat but rather as just another obstacle to my goals.

another weird thing ive noticed: I usually play on regent, regular size, with 3 opponents, continents type land base. It usually works out that one continent has two AI civs, and the other has me and the 3rd civ.

If i take most or all my my continent, then on the other continent one or the other civ will do the same thing, but if I only take about half, then the civs on the other continent each seem to be also content with just half. Is this just coincidence or is the AI purposely mirroring my advancement?

I am going to suggest happenstance, unless you are playing with the same AIs each time and they split the same way. Also, adjusting the AI aggressiveness during set up will affect that.
