I'm getting the impression that the AI has an enormous advantage with exploration. It looks to me like their galleys can cross the ocean (at least with the Great Lighthouse, but I think always). In any case, by the time I get the the ability to cross oceans, everything is explored and taken, even when I have a substantial tech lead and headed straight for magnetism.

Am I just looking at a fluke, or is this others experience as well.

What level are you playing on? I've played on both warlord and chieftan, and their galleys are always hugging the shore (usually right by my cities, but I know they'll eventually get what they deserve). The high seas are usually unexplored until well into the industrial age.

I've had the opposite experience. I'm usually the one who discovers new landmasses and shortly after I discover new land one or more of my opponents will come and try to beg borrow or steal my world map. If I have settlers on the way to the new continent I will soak the AI for some quick cash by selling my map. If I haven't had time to send settlers I keep my mouth shut and my map to myself. Because the AI will definitely start sending it's own people once it knows about new opportunity. This is on chieftain and warlord difficulty.
