AI impressed me...

While sharing a continent w/ Persia and Babylon, I (once provoked) and Babylon wittled Persia down to one city. I gained the majority of the spoils. As always when cities are captured (or razed), borders retract, leaving room for expansion.

I noticed a Babylon settler accompanied by a pikeman moving towards a coastal region I wanted for myself. I had a settler trekking in from some distance. I set about blockading the AI settler; however, during the turn, the AI moved a bowman one tile ahead of his settler/pikeman duo. The next turn, I move units about to blockade again. I still didn't think of his next move which was to move his bowman up a tile, followed by his settler/pikeman duo. It appeared to me that the AI was trying to prevent me from blockading his settler by keeping one tile ahead of it cleared. Realizing this I simply bloackaded the bowman as well and halted Babylon's expansion. My settler arrived and took the coastal region.

I was very impressed. In fact, when I realized what it was doing, I commented, "That bastard!"

It's annoying when that happens......

You know what that means. Kill the AI that was doing that.

Any excuse is an excuse for more land :)

Really, "I'm just a little annoyed at what you're doing" is a good enough excuse to me.

Looks like Firaxis put far more thought into their Settler Diarrhea garbage than actual relevant and important things.

Zouave,

that is exactly what I was thinking?!?!

I mean where is that kind of AI strategy when it comes to war?!?!

or trade?!?!

or anything else for that matter?!?!

Civ3 settlers remind me of Terminator----"I'll be baack"

Hey, I know! Let's go into the editor and make it so the Settler is an unbuildable unit. That way there can't be any rapid enemy expansion to deal with. That'll do it!

It is not a dishonor to declare war to protect your interests. It is only a dishonor to say one thing and do another. Declare war before attacking.

(Greed is a sufficient excuse.)

People have already done that - that's where OCC's come from :)

What I don't get is the AI's settler diarrhea crap. One of my friends (who is registered to civfanatics but never posts) once did a game on Chieftain where all the civs he discovered had at least 20 cities. His own civ had about 8.

To me, this suggests that your friend was too slow in his / her expansion!

as hor why sometimes the dairhoe stops:

the AI stick very strivtly to the Optimum City Number (OCN). Try this: set it to 4 for huge maps, and enjoy a game where colonies are really, really necessary!

The Ai is very impressive in other ways such as fighting wars (though it does leave something to be desired when it comes to artillery) and in building up large, stable, rich empires.
