AI using Mobile sams

This one unit the AI never used before and i made it use it out of pure luck lol. I increased its Attack to 6 and defense to 10 and gave it the radar, and detect invisible flags. I also increased its anti-air capability to 4.

Later in the modern age i spied on france and i saw they had around 100 units. 11 of those units were mobile sams surprisingly!


Out of topic: If i make a fighter or bomber invisible, do they act as if they were a stealth unit? I mean they cant be seen so i would assume they wouldnt be able to shoot it down. If that is the case then maybe the AI would see more value in building mobile sam units as detectors as well, and maybe they will finally stop chickening out when i got fighters in my cities and stop refusing to bomb me.

After all, to make it fair i can set the mobile sam as a stealth attack target to all aircraft. What are your opinions?
 
setting air units as stealth target for the mobile sam doesn't do anything cuz the mechanic of intersepting is different from a normal attack.

The real strength of each AA unit is 1/10th of the value shown in the editor. So Flak has a strength of 0.2.

Each AA unit in the tile being bombarded takes a shot against the defense of the bombarding air unit. The chance of shooting down the air unit is A/(A+D), as with all other forms of combat in Civ3. Remember, A is 10 times less than what is in the editor for the AA unit.

The maximum number of AA units that are given a chance to shoot down the plane is 4. Any AA units above 4 are ignored.

So, for example, if you want the formula for the probability of N units with a strength of A shooting down a plane with defense of D, here it is:

1 - (D / (D+A))^min(N,4)

D is the defense value of the bombarding air unit (2 for a bomber). No modifiers apply. A is the AA strength of the AA unit (0.2 for flak). N is the number of AA units, not the number of air units.

min(N,4) = N, if N less or equal to 4
min(N,4) = 4, if N greater than 4

The SAM battery works like this:

For each bomber, there is a chance equal to the interception chance for the SAM to fire (50% against conventional, 5% against stealth)

If the SAM doesn't fire, the bomber continues as if the SAM were not present. This includes the chance of getting shot down by AA fire.

If the SAM fires, it has a A/(A+D) probability to shoot down the plane (A=8 for the SAM, D=2 for the Bomber). If the plane is not shot down, the Bomber survives, but it loses its chance to do any damage as well.
 
1/10th really... I would think thats important info for it not to be in the editor. That explains a lot... so thats why the AI doesnt build those useless things unless you give them an appropiate value.

Its a shame there is only 1 graphic file that the game uses when it comes to shooting down planes. Did you look at the modern units thread on civ 3? Someone made a badass Soviet missile launcher. Only if could use that unit's graphix instead when shooting down. If i do that then the flak will also have that graphic lol.

Well im heading back to playing my game. 31 nations, 29 at war with me all cuz of greedy netherlands, im broke, im falling behind technologically, and the only way to make peace is by giving them my cities... Lots of fun lol. I got 6 cities left and had to barricade myself in italy and greece. Playing as the greeks on a world map. I rarely make fortresses but this game will be the exeption. There are like 15 cavalry attacking me per turn lol, and they didnt even give me a break to grow my industries. This is a first timer for me. The first time i actually find draft not overkill, and useful. Im surviving off of it, but i can no longer sustain my republic. Too bad im too farm from getting nukes :/ i might actually lose in about 20 turns when tanks start rolling in!
 
Laura I thought it did. I remember years back in vanilla before Conquests when my american F-16 stealth attacked a stack. I could never get the effect again ever for some odd reason tho... i went to the editor and i noticed that the F-16 was flagged for stealth attack. It could be that they made it so hard to stealth attack that most people havent seen it happen with the F-16. Heck after 10 years playing i've only had a hand full of ground unit stealth attacks ever happen.

Please don´t mix up "stealth" as an option that is especiallly adressed to aircraft in the unit abilities box of the editor and "stealth attack" that is a special feature for land and sea-units (that was introduced to Civ 3 with C3C).

"Stealth" is a factor that lessens the cjhange of aircraft beeing intercepted. In the General Settings of the editor, the normal rate of aircraft to be intercepted is set to 50 %, while the change of aircraft to be intercepted, when having the "Stealth"- Option is only 5 %. These settings can be changed in the General Settings of the C3C editor.

"Stealth Attack" is a special feature for units that are not airunits, that allows to pick out units from a stack to be attacked by a normal attack (not by bombardement). To work, this feature must have settings in the units page of the C3C editor, that allows this´kind of attack and also the Units, that can be picked out from the stack as a target for this Kind of attack. Stealth attack only works, if there are at least two allowed target Units inside the stack. If the stack only contains one allowed target, stealth attack unfortunatly doesn´t work. Let´s hope, Antal1987 anywhere in the future is able to fix that problem.

There is a third special Kind of attack that should be mentioned, when speaking about stealth attack and aircraft: "Precision bombing". This special kind of airattack allows to attack only buildings (or citizens). It is not possible, to select out a certain building for this Kind of airattack.
