When I have new alerts, I can mouseover the "Alert" tab, and get a dropdown showing me the alerts.
In my browser, ctrl-click will open links in a new tab.
If I hold control and carefully click on the link contained in the alert, it opens in a new tab, as desired.
If I slightly miss the link... the alert opens in the current tab, which is quite frustrating.
I would like one of the following, in decreasing order of preference,

I would like one of the following, in decreasing order of preference,
- for clicks in alert dropbox to always respect my desire to open in a new tab
- for nothing to happen if I click in the dropbox somewhere other than on a link
