If you can get them to be 'intimidated', they'll listen to you. Maybe try killing some of their units if you can. If not, hold out for maybe 5 turns and they'll get bored and listen to you.
Fall back, maybe abandon a city or two for ones you CAN defend, load all
your available forces there and try to hold out . If you can fight them
off a couple of turns and kill a few of their units they WILL be willing to
negotiate. You may have to give up some $ , a tech, or even a city if
situation is really dire.
When the war dissipates into a fight of attrition they will get weary after a while. Just be more stubborn and unless they are gaining ground, they will give up. Hit them where vulnerable, kill lots of units and don't go after cities unless you have a good army to hold more ground.

Build a settler and a boat, then move the settler all over the place on the boat. Maybe it doesn't work this way for a human player, but it works for AIs.
