Alpha Centuari! Did you like it?

I loved SMAC too (but agree that the AI made the game way too easy to win). What I particularly liked was the atmosphere. And am I the only one who actually LIKED the tech tree??

BRING BACK THE WONDERS MOVIES.

Maybe that's why I can't make myself leave my cities undefended in Civ3? I keep one defender even in my core cities under democracy although I know there's no way possible to reach them and I have railroad... just can't seem to make myself :)

Ditto! I'm just not comfortable unless I have at least one unit as backup.

The best parts of Alpha Centauri are the unit customization, the ability to choose an economic system in addition to government, and the wonder movies.

However, I like Civ III's graphics much better (especially the look of the terrain). I also like the larger number of rivals in the Civ III game. Furthermore, it seems more fun to face off against historical leaders rather than a bunch of made up ones.

When I attack and win I don't automatically move to the square of the enemy---this making conquering cities more tedious.
It favours defensive playing, I liked that. Don't you hate it when you have to move spearmen along with your armies to protect the poor wounded swordsman that just advanced into the open after killing enemy troops?

I love SMAC, the story and atmosphere is so much more elaborate than Civ 3's 'yet another sequel, create an empire to stand you-know-what' feel. Diplomacy is better than in Civ, Social Engineering beats Civ's 5 governments, other factions hating you for being a tree-hugger or capitalist or scientist added nicely to the gameplay. Alliances are more realistic (why can't you defend an ally's city with your units in Civ 3?).

That red soil on Chiron could get really depressing. I like Civ III's graphics -- especially Snoopy's mod.

I don't know, I never developed any feelings towards Civ's AI leaders, they seem all the same to me, aggressive and paranoid. All of them will pick on you when you're weak, and they will hate you when you're strong. They don't resemble those whose names they're bearing -- Ghandi for example. The SMAC leaders are all made up, but they are all distinct personalities.

Wonder Movies :goodjob:

And I've just learnt that I don't have to leave defenders in my core cities in Civ...

Am I the only one who didn't quite like the interface? :) The terrain graphics were too red for my liking (everything blended in). Other than that, it was a nice, and fast game. I don't know why Firaxis didn't use the SMAC engine.

Hi Chieftess. Just wanted to say that I enjoy your Demo game reports. As my grandfather would have said, 'you have a snazzy writing style'. (that IS a compliment . . . .really!)

Once I figured out what the supply crawler was and why I should use it, heaven!

The atmosphere is awesome...and I'll agree with all the other kudos and individual items mentioned by others, but the best thing that SMAC has over Civ3 is...

The Datalinks!

That you can consult them at ANY time--like when someone is talking to you and you actually NEED the info!--you can call up the datalinks. Try getting to the Civilopedia in the middle of talking to China...

(And yes, I like the fact that in the default mode you can't control what specific tech you get--much more like real life--but that while LOOKING at the tech tree in the datalinks is cool, it's hard to remember where you were when trying to follow a tech line forward and backwards. The ONLY negative about the game, IMHO.)

Two words:

Custom Governments

Custom Units

Supply crawlers

Floating cities

non-identical enemies

naming landmarks

I didn't like the Fungus all that much. With a little care, one could make a really good WW4 mod out of the game, but the mindworms and such would eventually peek their way in where they didn't belong. As part of the regular game, I thought the fungus and mindworms were pretty innovative, but mods were all but impossible.

When you play the Gaians, fungus is your bonus grassland with a cow on it and mindworms are you army.

Ahhh mastering the use of supply crawlers was essential for totally crushing your enemies. And i agree with s1mOne the Gianas could really kick some ass. Nothing beats the feeling then capturing 10 mindworms :)

Social engineering was a cool feature to. But as we have mentioned before the diffrent civs where really diffrent, the morgans for example really did get alot richer then the other civs.
