The Duke is totally right!!!
It is easy to win the game not using trade routs, but it is far more easy to win the game using trade routs, even domestic ones - actually I don't use anything but domestic trade routs, because as DeceptagonX - the AI won't be there for very long!!!
But the amount of money you can get from a few trade routs in each city, can help you to increase the development of technologies so much that I just wouldn't play a game without them any more.......
