I remember seeing a documentary on the starmaps that were used some 8000 years ago. A German scientist proposed a theory, in which the star-images were modelled after geographic findings on earth, i.e. coastlines and currents.
Since they did not use compasses back then, they had to navigate according to the angles of the stars. This they transformed into certain figures (the great bear, hydra, scorpion, dragon, etc.). Due to their travels those patterns evolved.
To a degree it seems obvious, else those figures would be purely random. On the other hand the scientist believed they travelled to the Americas across the Atlantic (not only along Greenland). Their ships would have to have been more evolved, than what is suspected now.
