Thank you for the map, @Lily_Lancer! A real nice one, indeed!
No, I did not eliminate him before he got Varus, but I wasn't eliminated by his Varus neither
Heeding your warning, I went straight for the Maryannus. But you must know exactly where to go to catch him early enough. What with a few barb problems and scattered forces, I concentrated when it was a bit too late. He got Varus, and he got walls, and he built a very unhelpful encampment in a very unfortunate spot for me. So I killed three of his Varus and an x-bow or two plus a spearman and maybe an archer in exchange for a couple of my Maryannus, stole his settler and made peace for some nice war reparations from his side. And forward settled him so hard, that his territory went no more than two tiles in my direction from his capital. That settle even held through my Dark Age Now I'm big on our continent (got relic from a village, religion, monumentality settlers, mmm...). And he never denounced me and stays below my military power, behaving in every way.
But the real kicker - I built the Great BathHanging Gardens ( ) wonder first time ever, and on online deity! Pure bliss. It did not go for so long, that I couldn't resist building it

Edit: added some further developments in the spoiler, reveals Chandra's secondary agenda, don't look if you want to go in blind
Spoiler:
I was wondering why he was being so tolerant towards me. When I noticed that I could send an embassy, I did so, and it appears, he likes big empires, which completely negates his aversion towards close neighbours.
I was about to gear up and go medieval on him, but now... I probably befriend him and form a cultural alliance, so that my border holds through my next Dark Age. His capital grew real big, and on Online those swings from Dark to Heroic to Dark to Heroic just happen on their own
