Ancient Age War

I defeated Carthage because they failed to build barracks so my small stack of swordmen were always fighting regular units and could win alot easier. I dislike splitting a stack of units unless I really have a huge amount of units as its easy to get bogged down with one attack failing because it didn't have enough support units...

Now that MGLs don't rush wonders I see even less reason for early wars. Granted it is nice to have the heroic epic already built when it's time to start conquering.

If you are prepared for an early war and the AI isn't then an early war can be hugely beneficial so that for the rest of the game your position as a powerful civ has already been established before ever having to have a huge war.

I quite like early wars, escpecially if u're oponent likes to expand rapidly..his cities will eb defended by only 1 spearman, wich become canonfodder for my swordsman and i end up over running most of there cities before they start to pose a chalange..then sign peace and u got a double expansion :)

Whenever possible, I have an Ancient Age war. It's how I get my wonders.

The last four games I played all had very good, decisive Ancient Age wars in them. This past game was especially good, as it was the first time I'd used catapults - a stack of 12 catapults along with two armies of swordsmen and maybe 8 odd veteran or elite swordsmen can go a long way. When the tech tree yielded the fruits of Feudalism and Engineering, I changed again - this time to Medieval Infantry and Trebuchets. Even with every city having at least three, if not six, Enkidu Warriors in them, I could take them out through patient bombardment and use of those armies.

Like I said, too, I rarely if ever build any wonders in the Ancient Age. Instead, I find the neighbor of mine who has built the most wonders, and I take them from him. I always seem to end up with the Pyramids with this tactic. Unless, of course, he builds the Statue of Zeus, in which case I leave him alone if I don't see a chance to take that city from him without much resistance.

It's much easier and simpler to build ten swordsman and take a wonder from your enemy than it is to build it yourself.

I push the tech tree hard so there's usually no point during the ancient age at which my cities don't have an improvement to be building, and I always need more workers. I don't think I've ever willingly entered a war before medieval infantry. Which means I should give it a try.

EDIT: I'm playing as Persians now, after getting iron working, ceremonial burial and pottery i turned my research off and built warriors. When i got an iron supply hooked up I upgraded them to Immortals and went to work on England. In a few turns, the English are down to two small cities, they gave me all the tech I would have gotten by researching on my own. So now I have the tech, the army, and the continent to myself. The only downside is that my cities are a bit underdeveloped without libraries and my golden age largely wasted due to despotism.
