It looks like your reputation only spreads if the Civilizations you attack have contact with the others.

For example, in my current game, I was playing the French and found myself on a continent with the English and Germans on either side of me. (Go figure). I refused to offer them contact with each other, and made sure that they didn't send units over my borders to make contact for themselves.

As soon as I got iron, I built 4 or 5 spearmen, later with some horsemen for backup and:

(1) Built up outside a border city with nice resources,
(2) Declared war
(3) Conquered 2 or 3 cities
(4) Offered peace for in return for all my neighbors gold, maps, and tech,
(5) Then started over with the other side

Neither side seemed to be aware of how often I had broken my treaties with the other neighbor. I kept this up until there were no German or English cities left and I had the continent to myself. Now, 400 years later, I've made contact with the Chinese at the next continent over, and *they* don't seem to know what a treacherous b***h Joan of Arc is.

The moral: if you can get away with it, feel free to wipe out your neighbor. Just make sure you finish it before they make contact with anyone else.

I may have to change my early play style ;)

If this is true, you want to blow away everyone on your continent ASAP.

I can't believe I use to play PEACEFULL with Civ2, but I am now starting to become a warmonger.

just the opposite for me. in civ2, building units and being aggressive was the best way to go (against AI and mulitplayer). in civ 3, i've stayed out of all wars (except at the very beginning), just developed flight tech and most my units are still impi's (go figure-impi's and bombers). i'm in 3rd place and haven't been attacked ONCE. that's 3 ERA'S!! this might change, however, if they develop spies, look into my cities, and realize my bark is bigger than my bite.
