Any guess when the game will ship for mac?

information on this subject is, at best, hard to find...
(main point of having a mac is to limit my gaming time  )

Maybe never.

@warpstorm: I think you are being unduly pessimistic. Every major Cv release has been ported to the Mac, only expansions have failed to make it. The Mac platform is now getting into many more homes, so I can see every reason for Civ4 to make it as well.

@rickb: Interesting list. So is it Booty Call, corey, liver or onions? I'm an optimist, so maybe it's one of the last two, for a simultaneous holiday season Mac/PC release?

The reason I am pessimistic is the fact that they used Gamebryo as their graphics engine. It doesn't support the Mac and to make a version of it that did without NDL's permission would be a major breach of contract. To make a Gamebryo-alike after having had the Gamebryo source code for years, would probably land tham in court.

ugh, rise of nations is still in beta for porting! good thing im on a pc =\

Shouldn't have bought a MAC if you want to play games.

Rise of Nations for the Mac shipped a long time ago. The Westlake page hasn't been updated in well over a year. More to the point - the remaining Westlake guys now work directy for MacSoft as internal programmers. I believe Westlake the company now exists in name only - there's no active work being done there as far as I know.

And why couldn't it be licensed for the Mac? The prior versions of Gamebryo (known as the NetImmerse engine) were brought to the Mac in a number of titles.

Which titles? And why doesn't NDL advertise it in the documentation I've got here if they have a MAc version? It just lists PC, X-Box, PS, and Gamecube.

Freedom Force is the most recent title I can think of. I can't find a comprehensive list of NI engine games, but if I could, I'd be able to give you more details. (For all I know, maybe Freedom Force is the only one so far.)

They don't supply a Mac-native version, but that wouldn't stop them from licensing out the Win32 version for porting to the Mac. Most Mac porting houses have Mac-native DirectX libraries (including the one I work for), so using a Win32-based engine like NetImmerse in a Mac port is not a big deal.

Of course, that's just my informed guess. :) You'd have to ask NDL themselves if you want a definitive answer.

I guess I will have to ask them why they dropped Mac support when they went from NetImmerse to Gamebryo.

Maybe I was unclear - they've never had formal Mac support in that they ship a version of their engine that is OpenGL-based and builds natively for the Mac. This is probably why they've never advertised Mac support. However, that is in no way an impediment for licensing the engine on the Mac as they provide full source to the engine as part of the license.

I know they give the source, I have it right here and look at it daily.

Dont use a Mac if you wanna play games :P

I'd rather install OS-X, or whatever its called again, on a PC then use a Mac.

Solution: slughammer and new PC

Ask a simple question, get a lot of snotty answers.

I'm on a Mac too -- not to limit my gaming time but because it's my platform of choice -- and this was my first question when I saw the news about Civ IV. Civ III is the only game I ever play -- but, man, do I love playing it.

I'm hoping AlanH is right and that Apple's continued rise in mindshare, if not exactly marketshare, gets Civ IV ported quickly and comprehensively. I'd love to add Civ IV to my Christmas list.

@Brad: Aren't you the guy largely responsible for porting Civ III to the Mac? [edit: Uh, nevermind. Didn't read your description.]

Gotcha. :) If you look at the Gamebryo engine, you'll notice they have lots of hooks in there for big-endian and Mac support, which sadly are broken as-is. Still, most porting houses (like Aspyr) have DX and Win32 porting libraries, so for a title like Civ4, Gamebryo would not present a technical obstacle. The same would hold true of any 3rd-party SDK that is provided with source.
