I am now taking signups for my fourth PBEM game!

So far, I have the following confirmed players:
  • heihojin (me) - random civ
  • DogBoy - no civ preference yet specified
If you would like to play, please post a reply, send a private message, or e-mail me with your e-mail address and civ preference (if any). I require your e-mail address to hold your spot.

Please also either update your profile to indicate your location - city, state (if you're in the U.S.A.), and country - or indicate your location in your request to play. I use this information to arrange turn sequence from East to West around the globe.

I am willing to customize your civ for you if you provide the appropriate information for the fields (Formal, Noun, Adjective, Title). Please note that your civ is considered public information at the start of the game; if you opt for a customized, random civ, you are expected to inform the group of the actual civ given to you immediately following your first turn.

The game will begin as soon as I have eight confirmed players, or sometime on Monday, January 20th (Arizona time), whichever occurs first. If you have not specified a civ preference by that time, you will be assigned a random civ. Spots for the game and civ preferences will be filled first-come, first-served, as determined by the timestamp of the request.

Turn summaries will not be posted to this or any other forum. I am far more interested in actually playing the game than with posting turns in a public forum.

Commitments

By requesting to play you commit to the following:
  • You agree to contact me (through e-mail, private message, a third party or other means) as soon as possible if you encounter technical difficulties or other circumstances that prevent you from fulfilling these commitments.
  • You agree to act in a courteous manner toward all other players at all times in your "out-of-game" communication.
  • You agree to abide by the general protocol for gameplay as set forth in the welcome e-mail, as well as any changes to the protocol I may make during the course of the game.
  • You agree to inform the group when you are going to be unavailable for a period of greater than 24 hours.
  • You agree to check your e-mail at least once daily (at least twice daily is preferred).
  • You agree to promptly respond to all messages - immediately, if possible.
  • You agree to complete and forward your turn within 24 hours of receiving it.
  • You agree to refrain from "in-game" communication with another player until making contact with that player's civilization.
If you would like to peruse the general protocol for gameplay prior to signing up, let me know and I will happily e-mail it to you.

"In-game" communication refers to sharing information about your civ or other players' civs, making deals, proposing alliances, etc.. "Out-of-game" communication primarily refers to administrative matters (such as "Dude, where's my turn?" e-mails), but also includes innocuous conversation (such as "Where is everyone from?" e-mails).

Default Game Settings and Rules

Unless specified otherwise, the default game settings and rules will be as follows:
  • Game Type: Play By Email
  • Game Mode: Standard
  • Turn Timer: None
  • World Size: Standard
  • Barbarian Activity: Roaming
  • Land Mass: Continents
  • Water Coverage: 70% Water
  • Climate: Normal
  • Temperature: Normal
  • Age: 4 Billion
  • Difficulty: Regent
  • Allow Domination Victory
  • Allow Space Race Victory
  • Allow Diplomatic Victory
  • Allow Conquest Victory
  • Allow Cultural Victory
  • Allow Civ-Specific Abilities
  • Preserve Random Seed
  • Allow Cultural Conversions
Please note that many of these rules are open to discussion beforehand; I will generally side with the majority opinion.

One question that has frequently arisen is whether reloading the game is allowed. Although the "Preserve Random Seed" rule removes most of the incentive for reloading, there are of course other advantages. Unfortunately I know of no way to regulate the number of times the game is reloaded, so any rule prohibiting reloading is impossible to enforce. Furthermore, reloading seems quite acceptable in the event of an error, e.g. if you make a mistake in moving your units. Because I am reluctant to support rules that cannot be enforced, and because I'm sure that I personally will have to reload at least one game due to an error, I do not have any rules regulating reloads. Ultimately, it's a question of what provides the most enjoyment for you as a player.

Please note that once you make contact with another player's civ, your diplomacy options are completely unrestricted. Feel free to invent whatever deals you wish, regardless of whether they are enforceable from within the game or not.

These games tend to fill up quickly, so submit your request to play now! I will accept a couple of alternate spots in the unfortunate event a player is unable to continue with the game.

Here's to the next war! :ar15::rocket:

I just sent the welcome e-mail, and the first turn.

When you receive the welcome e-mail, please send me a quick reply to let me know you've received it. If for some reason you have not received the welcome e-mail, please let me know as well.

Please employ e-mail for all communication from this point forward; I won't be regularly checking this thread.

As I'm sure you have read from the related e-mail exchange, this game will continue to be played as v1.14f until all players have access to the v1.21f patch.

If you need to create two distinct installations of Civ3:PTW on your PC, please follow these directions:
  1. Copy the entire CIV3PTW folder to some other directory (perhaps C:\), and rename the copy (perhaps as "CIV3PTW v1.21f").
  2. Uninstall Civ3:PTW and restart your computer.
  3. Reinstall Civ3:PTW.
  4. Download the v1.14f patch from here.
  5. Install the v1.14f patch.[/list=1]This way when you launch Civ3:PTW normally, it will pull up as v1.14f. When you want to play v1.21f, browse to the copied directory you made and launch "Civilization3X.exe" (the executable). You can also create a shortcut to this file on your desktop; just be sure to label it as "v1.21f".

Note that even when using two distinct installations, your default Saves folder will always be in your Civilization III\CIV3PTW folder, and **NOT** the copied folder you made!

This may sound complex, and I apologize for the need to do this. If you have any questions or need any assistance, please ask - I will do my utmost to ensure that this is as painless as possible for you, and that this game survives.

Ok, this game is going very smoothly (now about 1 turn a day!) and we're at 3000BC (hey, its my second farthest :p )

Sadly though, only I, Dogboy, FinTom, heihojin and CivAddict remain. The others quit. But thats why its going so quickly.

I have met CivAddict (no I dont want to trade).

Oh yes, free settlers are nice...

I figured that out by now. When you didn't take the first tech I thought maybe you didn't want it. That's why I offered you the second tech. When you killed my scout, I figured you didn't want anything from me. That's ok, that's what scouts are for.

I dont like scouts traveling in my land and around it taking my goody huts. And I guess that means you saw my free city too :D

Actually, I didn't see your free city. I think you killed my scout too soon. But that's not to say I won't see it soon.:p

I'm so glad to see you two boys getting along so well! :love2:

Well, that was a pretty nice letter Playboy! Once this game finishes, I might put it here for the public to see.

By the way, you probably won't be playing this game past the middle ages since I have now made it my personal mission to obliterate you :)

Why wait? Your avowed destruction of me will only prevent you from developing your resources to challenge the other players in the game.

Here is the three letter sequence to which you refer:

Hear Ye! Hear Ye!

My fellow despots!

I, Playboy, leader of tribes do hereby publicly proclaim the dishonor of the ruler Wildfire444, henceforth known as Wildfire the Perfidious.

Early in the fourth age of Heihojin, as civilizations awoke there was discord amongst the families of America. The CivAddict clan was toppled and the familius Playboy rose to power. Shortly thereafter, Despot Playboy I was contacted by the Persian pipples, nefariously ruled by Wildfire the Perfidious. This despicable despot begged for a formal peace treaty between our peoples, not once, not twice, but thrice before Playboy finally acquiesced.

Given such assurances of peace, the American garrisons were dispersed to explore the countryside. Unbeknownst to them the foul and perfidious Wildfire had been moving troops in the direction of America throughout the years he had been pleading for peace. Not long after, with neither declaration of war, nor valid provocation, the low-down and treacherous Wildfire sent a missive of muttered obscenity (that in itself a breach of game protocol and civility) and fait accomplit. When next America awoke, the evil-smelling Persian had sacked the first of two American cities he was to detroy. He continues to attack the valiant defenders of the city of Chicago at this very moment!

While leaving one's cities undefended might be considered either naive or daring, I would accept this judgement had not a treaty been in place. We, as the rulers of our empires, must be men of honor in our dealings with each other, lest our territory devolve into armed camps with little progress and few amenities. If we make treaties, we must abide by them, and if we do not, our dastardly deeds should be made known to all, if only to warn our fellow leaders of treacherous players.

Wherefore,

In that spirit of honor code, I condemn Wildfire the Perfidious. His words are false, and his treaties are only worth wiping the swill that pours from his lips. Be warned, fellows, he is a player not to be trusted. I call upon all just leaders to repudiate his actions and bring pressure to demand an immediate cessation of his barbaric aggression.

Playboy
For the American people
Heihojin 4

OOC - When playing solo, the AI knows and remembers when treaties are broken among other nations. As there is no in-game way to handle this design facet amongst human players, the above proclamation stands in to approximate the effect. Whether or not you choose to ignore this email may depend on whether you pay attention to the same type of behavior from the AI, as well your perspective on whether a man's word is his bond in a community of fellow gamers.

Then, of course, was your eloquent rebuttal which tried to obfuscate, as there is no denial of your perfidious treaty violation:

Now the other side of the war...

The Great WildFire of the Persians, the most powerful to this day and age, has been at war with the Americans almost constantly since our first cities were formed. The former president CivAddict sent numerous scouts to my land and I promised him that if he was to get near to any of my warriors, I would destroy the scout so that he would not steal my precious goody huts and know my valuable land. Now, as my warriors were exploring south, outside the borders of the American land in a time of peace, I just happened to see that one city WITH dyes in its borders was not even defended by a warrior! The warrior relayed this information back to the mighty WildFire who in turn, told that warrior to enter the land and sack and destroy the city.

A few turns later, another warrior came across another city that was NOT DEFENDED. This city was plundered and destroyed during the war, not during the peace like the latter city. WildFire, the great and mighty leader, believes this war is in the fault of the American leader Playboy, because most cities are usually gaurded in the game as to assure a attack will be foiled.

If anyone is at fault, it is the weak and puny americans who have failed to realise that an army is needed to back up one's words. The destruction of the Americans will follow soon and the mighty Xerxes has become pissed off and he see's no chance for peace.

Much Hatred,
Darius.
