Another concept of the tech tree...

Well, since it's more a concept than a suggestion (and since Firaxis doesn't really care of our suggests now, it's too late) I'll post my idea here.
Yesterday, after being stuck till 4am on Civ2, I found something illogical with Civ2. I won't repeat since I already stated that here .

So, what I thought could be that Civ IV (he...) could really improve both the diplomatic part and the science part just changing the predefined tech tree.
I mean once you discover an appropriate "mother-tech", all the "heir-techs" are made available to you to research them. It would be more interesting to have only 2 or 3 of them appear at a time and of course they should appear randomly. So since each civ will follow a different way, exchange will be essential for them in order to survive. That would be also realistic, since exchange, trades = friendship with other civs = less war.
Concerning realism, what I stated does make sense, IMO, since in the real life you could see that was exactly what happened. Chinese discovered gunpowder/fireworks very early while European were more focused on philosophy. Then after Marco Polo, exchanges benefitted everybody. That was an example, of course. I think you understood what I meant.

Anyway, you might also find that I'm crazy and that also might be true. After all, it was 4 am and I was tired

Waiting for your opinions.

well, it´s a great idea, but it will put a randomized part into civ3 and that´s not good. i mean, if someone gets monarchy early just because he has luck, he will get a great advantage and that´s not fair.

To be honest, don't you think there's already a huge part of luck in Civ. Not only the combats but as soon as the beginning, there's an unfair situation. If you start on desert ground or poor tiles, you'll be definitely out. You know how important the beginning is. I meant starting with whales is far better than starting in toundra...

And in real life it's the same. I have NOT told that techs will never be available to a civ. I just suggested that they might appear later than for the other civs, but on the other hand you can benefit some advances that other civs don't have yet.

What about a little menu that looks like the Tax/Science/Luxury menu, where you can dedicate a percentage of your science beakers to the 4 different type of techs - not sure what they are called, but the blue, the green, the orange & the grey. Then the advances that you have put more resources towards will appear faster.

yes, there are a huge part of luck in civ, but adding more won´t make it better.

Ghenghis, I like your idea but I don't know how practical it would be.

I like researching the techs in a certain order, depending on my game plan, which depends on the map.

If it was random and say I ended up on an island, I would be screwed until map making randomly gets discovered. Or if I was being attacked on two different fronts and hadn't lucked out on discovering warrior code yet while they had elephants, I would have no way to hurry up and discover feudalism to protect my people.

It's a nice idea however, just not that practical in my opinion.

Forget random! If you're going to do that, give each Civilization should have it's own tech tree... That way some civilization wouldn't be able to discover certain things on their own. And the tech tree would have a slightly different shape for each civilization. This would be even more realistic. In fact, why not go the full way and do what has been done in many other games and make each civ quite different... I'm not sure if I'd like it in Civilization, though, as a civ fan I'm used to each side being perfectly equal. Don't leave anything to chance — just strategy all the way... So, I would have to conclude NO WAY to your idea, Genghis.
