Another newbie question :Where is the tanks?

Ive played a game on the eaisist level (chieftien) and I played it all the way too 2050 AD . The game automaticly ended at 2050 AD, so im stuck with riflemen and artlillery. Do I have to play on a different level to get higher technology.

On chieftain, the speed of tech is dependent almost solely on the player. The AI has penalties that make it about twice as hard for them to do stuff as it would for you. So if you have good infrastructure and get many of the wonders, the player should be able to get to the modern age. On the harder levels, the AI will research many of the techs themselves, and trade them, so everyone advances much faster. On Deity, spaceships are launched 1000-1400 A.D.

It could also be that you don't have the proper resources to build tanks. You need to have roads to oil and rubber or be trading for them to have tanks appear on you build menu.

Yeah, I found that out after I started a new game the other day. I was able to build a lot of navel units, but finding oil and steel is hard. And of course no body wants to trade it.
