Another PTW Crash

I`m sorry if this is another crash thread. But, because I still don`t get any reply by PM, I think it`s ok to ask here. Just like any other player who wants to enjoy this gotm.

Straight to the point:

Crash happens when clicking on the building list and/or science advisor screen (F6 IIRC). The game just get out to the desktop. Windows dialog shows whether I want to send report to MS or not.

No error mention whatsoever. Anything else is ok except for these two buttons. I could choose the tech and unit or improvement when asked but I just can`t go to change them manually.

I have no problem playing GOTM23. So the problem may be due to some icons for the new tech or unit. I use ptw 1.21f and have the latest pediaicons.txt (incl. in savegame). Downloaded on 7/10/2003.

So, please help! Otherwise no gotm for me this month

I'm no expert but if you want something to do while waiting for the powers that be try this:

Download the ADD-ON pack again and reinstall. Many players have indicated that this solved their problems. (If you've already tried this, sorry.)

I will assume by 7/10/2003 you mean Oct 7, 2003 (We Americans often put the month first.) That sounds like you may be past the date where the changes happened but you could have gotten a corrupted file on your download.

Feelgood, we want to get you started so you can play but it really is not OK to open your own personal service thread in the forums without giving us at least a chance to try an digest your problem and get you a solution.

Your statement of still don`t get any reply by PM implies that you sent the PM query and it has been days and days that everyone is ignoring your cry for help, when if fact you just sent the PM in yesterday describing a problem that we have to try and replicate and then get back with you. Clearly the problem you describe is not a general problem with the game or the setup because if it were no one would be playing at all.

The reason we try not to solve these problems in the poblic discussion threads is that 99% of the problesms end up being resolved by some sort of "not following the instructions" or impatience issues. When we solve these problems problems by PM it avoids the issues of having to ask questions that come across as "Is my underwear on backwards?"

Your problem description is that you are loading the starting save game file and founding your first city in PTWv1.21. You did not tell us whether you are loading the Conquest, Open, or Predator game so we have to guess and try all three. None of the test machines replicates this problem in any version of the game when the PTW game pack is properly installed.

The common element in the crash to desk top problem that you describe is that you cannot open the science advisor or the build queue. This tends to indicate that the game cannot open the graphics files properly and the leading cause of this problem is when users do not follow the instructions on the autoinstaller when the auto installer asks you to point to the folder where your Civilization3.exe program resides. We get every possible permutation of players missing the target but the most common error is when players point to the CIV3PTW folder by mistake because it contains the confusingly named Civilization3x.exe program.

Again, we know the auto installer is working properly and that the game plays on PTW versions 1.14 1.21 and 1.27.

When you have a first turn crash to black, this indicates you do not have the game pack installed properly and we need to fumble around with you in private to search and see where you may have misspointed the installer or if you misinterpreted things and downloaded the wrong game pack by mistake.

This proceeds much more quickly by PM instead of creating needless spin off confusion here in the public forums. You just have to be patient and not expect instantaneous service as you have done in this case.

I have done everything I know and still to no avail. I`m give up. No GOTM for now. Thanks anyway for replying.

Do I need GOTM24 pack for GOTM 25? If it is, then no GOTM until after conquest maybe for me !

It will probably be that there will be no GOTM for you forever, untill you can follow the simple request that will help you figure out if you are trying to cram a square peg into a round hole.

We know the games are working when you have the game pack installed, so the only reasons the game cannot be working on your machine are choices that you may be making.

We can help you sort these out, but throwing up random posts here in the forums will do nothing to fix the root problem and get the games running.

Gotm25, 26, and 27 will require the Gotm24 game packs.

Civ3 Conquests will unfortunately do nothing to solve your problem here.
